PHOENIX (AZFamily)<\/b> \u2014 A Phoenix police officer who was killed in the line of duty last year will be honored with a marker at the site of the incident that ended with his death. <\/p>\n

Officer Zane Coolidge will now be remembered with a historical memorial marker near where he was shot<\/a>. The Phoenix Police Department announced the marker on McDowell Road just east of 16th Street to honor the sacrifice of the fallen officer. <\/p>\n

Coolidge died in September 2024 after he was shot while responding to a reported car break-in<\/a> at 16th Street and McDowell Road. Another officer sustained serious injuries and was able to recover. <\/p>\n

The suspect, Saul Bal, was arrested after the shooting and was later indicted on several felony charges, including first-degree murder. His attorneys entered a not guilty plea on his behalf.<\/p>\n

In a 12-page motion<\/a> filed in April, attorneys for Bal said \u201csubstantial procedural rights\u201d were violated when the grand jury was not allowed to consider self-defense. They claimed that prosecutors kept \u201coverwhelming evidence\u201d of self-defense from the grand jury and asked that the case be sent back for reconsideration of probable cause.<\/p>\n

Bal\u2019s next court appearance is scheduled for Nov. 20. Prosecutors have announced their intent to pursue the death penalty.<\/p>\n

Officer Coolidge, 29, was laid to rest<\/a> on Sept. 18, 2024. He leaves behind a wife and young daughter.<\/p>\n
