{"id":190144,"date":"2025-08-31T22:22:10","date_gmt":"2025-08-31T22:22:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/190144\/"},"modified":"2025-08-31T22:22:10","modified_gmt":"2025-08-31T22:22:10","slug":"chicago-will-see-an-ice-surge-dhs-secretary-noem-says","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/190144\/","title":{"rendered":"Chicago will see an ICE surge, DHS Secretary Noem says"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem acknowledged Sunday a surge of Immigration and Customs Enforcement operations in Chicago in the coming days but stopped short of saying it will be accompanied by a National Guard deployment.<\/p>\n<p>Any military presence ultimately would be President Donald Trump\u2019s call, Noem said, but Gov. JB Pritzker reiterated that such a move would be against federal law and warned it would be met in court \u201cpretty quickly\u201d by the state.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m saying we don\u2019t want troops on the streets of American cities<strong>,\u201d <\/strong>Pritzker said. \u201cThat\u2019s un-American and, frankly, the president of the United States ought to know better. This one doesn\u2019t seem to. He doesn\u2019t seem to understand the Constitution or the laws.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Noem and Pritzker each appeared on CBS News\u2019 \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/face-the-nation-full-transcript-08-31-2025\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Face the Nation<\/a>\u201d on Sunday, though in separate interviews. Their appearance came as Chicago prepared for more intensive ICE enforcement, which could begin <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2025\/08\/30\/mayor-brandon-johnson-executive-order-federal-crackdown\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">as soon as Friday<\/a>, with agents based at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2025\/08\/29\/chicago-mayor-not-want-federal-occupation-naval-base-federal-agents\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Naval Station Great Lakes<\/a> in North Chicago.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ve already had ongoing operations with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2025\/01\/26\/trumps-border-czar-top-doj-official-arrive-in-chicago-to-observe-immigration-enforcement-operations\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ICE in Chicago<\/a> and throughout Illinois, and other states, making sure that we\u2019re upholding our laws, but we do intend to add more resources to those operations,\u201d Noem said.<\/p>\n<p>Asked if a surge in ICE operations was planned for other cities, she said she would not discuss specifics but said the efforts were not aimed at Democrat-led urban areas and could include cities in Republican states.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s a lot of cities that are dealing with crime and violence right now and so we haven\u2019t taken anything off the table. We\u2019ve been making sure that we have the resources and the equipment to go in,\u201d Noem said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019d encourage every single big city, San Francisco, Boston, Chicago, whatever they are, if they want to help make their cities safer \u2026 they should call us,\u201d she said, citing declines in violent crime after Trump federalized law enforcement in Washington, D.C., and deployed National Guard troops.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEvery single city is evaluated for what we need to do there to make it safer. So we\u2019ve got operations that, again, I won\u2019t talk about details on. But we absolutely are not looking through the viewpoint at anything we\u2019re doing with a political lens,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Noem, a former South Dakota governor, belittled Pritzker for not personally calling Trump and seeking federal intervention to address Chicago crime.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis seems like it\u2019s more about Gov. Pritzker\u2019s ego now, rather than actually protecting his people. If he had one murder in Chicago, he should be calling President Trump and saying, \u2018What\u2019s your ideas? What can we do?\u2019\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo he can talk about what a great job he\u2019s doing as governor but he\u2019s failing those families who will no longer have their child with them, their mother or their father or their cousin, aunt and uncle that are gone forever because of the violence that\u2019s happening in Chicago,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Pritzker, in an unaired portion of his Friday interview with CBS White House correspondent Ed O\u2019Keefe, said he has not called the Trump administration to tell them not to come to Chicago because \u201cI think I\u2019ve been pretty clear publicly\u201d and that if the president wants to send in the Guard, \u201che should call.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHonestly, we\u2019d be happy to receive a call,\u201d the two-term Democratic governor said. \u201cWhen we have an emergency and we need the federal government to send troops in, believe me, I will pick up the phone and call. (Brian Cassella\/Chicago Tribune)<\/p>\n<p>But Pritzker said the ICE surge is \u201cinflaming passions and causing disruption that doesn\u2019t need to be caused.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have people that have lived in the state of Illinois and the city of Chicago for decades, working here, paying taxes. They\u2019re law-abiding members of our communities, friends, neighbors, and why are we arresting them? Why are we making them disappear?\u201d Pritzker asked, saying he would tell Noem \u201cto maybe check herself for, what does she really believe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Discussing the issue of mid-decade redistricting, which Trump has pushed in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2025\/08\/04\/democrats-texas-republicans\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Texas<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2025\/08\/13\/indiana-house-democrats-join-texas-house-democrats\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">other GOP-led states<\/a>, Pritzker said \u201cit is possible to have more Democratic districts in the state of Illinois and we could do it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Texas Republicans have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.texastribune.org\/2025\/08\/29\/greg-abbott-signs-texas-congressional-map-redistricting\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">signed into law<\/a>\u00a0redrawn congressional boundaries aimed at flipping five Democratic seats\u00a0in the U.S. House for the 2026 midterm elections, as part of Trump\u2019s effort to\u00a0maintain a\u00a0GOP House\u00a0majority through the end of the decade.\u00a0Democratic-led California\u00a0recently <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/california-texas-redistricting-congressional-map-4c22e21d5d4022d33a257045693b6fd4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">responded to Texas\u2019 move<\/a> as\u00a0Gov. Gavin Newsom is asking voters to approve a map aimed at giving his party five more U.S. House seats, but late last week,\u00a0Missouri\u00a0Republican Gov. Mike Kehoe said he is calling lawmakers into a special session to redraw that state\u2019s House districts.<\/p>\n<p>When asked whether Illinois would join in the redistricting fight, Pritzker said, \u201cThat\u2019s not something that I want to do. It\u2019s not something any of us want to do,\u201d he said of Democratic-led states. \u201cIf he\u2019s going to do that all over the country, I think all of us have to think about what it is that we can do to counter that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Illinois\u2019 Democratic-led redistricting map approved after the 2020 federal census was politically gerrymandered to create a 14-3 Democratic majority in the 17-member House delegation. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2025\/08\/19\/illinois-legislative-independent-map-effort-2026\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Illinois map<\/a> earned a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2021\/10\/15\/new-congressional-maps-from-illinois-democrats-seek-to-extend-house-majority-putting-adam-kinzinger-in-a-left-leaning-district-with-marie-newman\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">grade of \u201cF\u201d<\/a> from the Princeton Gerrymandering Project.<\/p>\n<p>Pritzker, who is seeking a third term next year, did little to dispel his interest in a potential 2028 run for the Democratic presidential nomination, saying, \u201cI don\u2019t know what the future holds.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou know, I look around, we\u2019ve got a bench among the Democratic Party that is really terrific. I could point to governors. I could point to senators.
