{"id":190398,"date":"2025-09-01T00:54:13","date_gmt":"2025-09-01T00:54:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/190398\/"},"modified":"2025-09-01T00:54:13","modified_gmt":"2025-09-01T00:54:13","slug":"riverkeeper-volunteers-tackle-trash-near-mccoys-creek-resident-news","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/190398\/","title":{"rendered":"Riverkeeper Volunteers Tackle Trash Near McCoys Creek \u2013 Resident News"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A St. Johns Riverkeeper volunteer group patrolled the river\u2019s north bank on Sunday, July 20, near McCoys Creek to remove debris and prevent it from getting back into the waterway.<\/p>\n<p>Roughly 20 volunteers attended last month\u2019s event, part of a monthly cleanup program organized by the Riverkeeper in its continued efforts to keep the river clean. In its 25 years, the organization has conducted more than 440 river cleanup events throughout the St. Johns River watershed. Although an extreme heat advisory cut the cleanup short, the group was able to collect a decent mound of garbage from the northbank.<\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/MccoysCreekCleanup_Photo001-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"Volunteers trek along St. Johns River Sunday, July 20, from the Winston Family YMCA to McCoys Creek removing waste as part of the St. Johns Riverkeeper McCoys Creek Cleanup program.\" class=\"wp-image-59735\"  \/>Volunteers trek along St. Johns River Sunday, July 20, from the Winston Family YMCA to McCoys Creek removing waste as part of the St. Johns Riverkeeper McCoys Creek Cleanup program.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt takes events like this to make people realize how much help and care the river needs,\u201d said Isabel Hernandez, a volunteer organizer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe enjoy coming down and helping out,\u201d added volunteer Kim Corey, of St Mary\u2019s, Georgia. \u201cMy husband got me into it and now we come down and make a day of it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The pile of removed debris included a pool noodle, a trash can lid, pieces of a Styrofoam cooler and a metal broom handle. The Riverkeeper suggests that volunteers bring a full, reusable water bottle, closed-toe shoes (rain boots, work boots or waders are helpful) and yard gloves.
