{"id":190720,"date":"2025-09-01T03:51:15","date_gmt":"2025-09-01T03:51:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/190720\/"},"modified":"2025-09-01T03:51:15","modified_gmt":"2025-09-01T03:51:15","slug":"nation-first-ban-on-fish-shaped-plastic-soy-sauce-containers-begins-in-sa","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/190720\/","title":{"rendered":"Nation-first ban on fish-shaped plastic soy sauce containers begins in SA"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">They are one of the most familiar sights among takeaway sushi shops around the world, but from today, fish-shaped plastic soy sauce containers are officially on the way out in South Australia.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">In the state&#8217;s latest move to phase out single-use plastics, SA has become the first place in the nation to ban the small fish-shaped containers, from September 1, 2025.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">From today, any plastic fish containers with a lid, cap or stopper, containing less than 30ml of soy sauce will be banned, including small rectangular containers.<\/p>\n<p>So, what&#8217;s the alternative?<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">While it&#8217;s hoped businesses will focus on providing bulk bottles or dispensers of soy sauce in store, plastic sachets will also be allowed in sushi shops instead.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Environment Minister Susan Close said ideally, businesses will avoid single-use plastics altogether, but sachets are still an improvement.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;They are still plastics, but they&#8217;re much lighter weight, much easier to dispose, and a lot less wasteful,&#8221; Ms Close said at a press conference on Saturday.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Woman in a beige dress with floral print sitting in an office.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/1ee92c04a15a2b5c085958602a7927e3\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Environment Minister Susan Close says the fish-shaped packaging is particularly dangerous for wildlife. (ABC News: Carl Saville)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Ms Close said soy sauce sachets require less energy to manufacture, and are safer for birds and marine life.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;You can imagine there is sea life that would want to eat something that looks a bit like a fish, so this is one of the worst examples, of wasteful, and harmful single-use plastic and it&#8217;s about time we got rid of them,&#8221; she said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Plastic coffee cups and takeaway food containers are among other items which have also been phased out in SA since 2021.<\/p>\n<p>What do business owners think?<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Stella is a co-owner of Sushi Block in the Adelaide CBD and said she&#8217;s pleased with the change, but it will take some adjusting for businesses.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;We were given some notice so we&#8217;ve just been working with suppliers to give us a replacement, which no longer has that plastic shaped fish that everyone&#8217;s so used to,&#8221; she told ABC Radio Adelaide.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;If we do run out then we do have the glass bottle dispenser.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A soy sauce fish in sand\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/aa3c0bbc0356fa5def8c8c3f8181eacf\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Small plastic fish-shaped soy sauce containers are banned in SA from today. (ABC News: Meagan Dillon)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">However, it&#8217;s up to individual states and territories to phase out the plastics on their own timeline.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">According to a 2023 report from WWF-Australia, every state and territory has phased out plastic bags.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">It&#8217;s\u00a0a similar story for items like plastic plates and bowls, straws, cutlery and expanded polystyrene cups and containers used for takeaway food.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">They&#8217;ve been <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/science\/2023-07-31\/war-on-waste-single-use-plastics-states-territories\/102554268\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/102554268\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">phased out everywhere except the\u00a0NT\u00a0and Tasmania, which have committed to doing so by 2025<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">While WA and SA have forged ahead with plans to phase out single-use coffee cups, it&#8217;s not yet being considered by Victoria,\u00a0the ACT, Tasmania and NSW.<\/p>\n<p>SA premier expects others to follow<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">South Australian Premier Peter Malinauskas said the latest move to ban fish-shaped soy sauce containers was another step forward in the state&#8217;s bid for environmental reform.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;We know that plastics can play an important role in our economy and our society but when they&#8217;re single-use, they&#8217;re often going directly to waste,&#8221; he said at a press conference on Monday morning.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;And to the extent that you can minimise that waste, that has a whole range of environmental benefits.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;We&#8217;re committed to making sure that we have a progressive government that is seeking to address environmental reform where we can, and mitigating the use of single-use plastics is a good thing to do.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">He said the state had a &#8220;proud tradition&#8221; of leading the nation when it comes to environmental reform and he expected other states to follow.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"EmphasisedText_quote__TE6kn\"><p>&#8220;What we see often when it comes to the outlawing of single-use plastics is one state will make an action and the rest will follow,&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>  he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;We&#8217;ve got a proud history of that in South Australia and I imagine that will continue for some time to come.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">An ACT government spokesperson from said fish-shaped soy sauce containers were not currently under consideration for a ban, but the territory was committed to phasing out &#8220;problematic&#8221; waste.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;Plastic single-serve soy sauce fish packaging is currently not banned in the ACT and is not under consideration for banning in the future at this stage,&#8221;
