When Boston-based designer Nina Farmer<\/a> began crafting a New York City pied-\u00e0-terre for a repeat client, the direction was clear from the start. The two-bedroom residence overlooking Central Park is located in an Art Deco landmark<\/a> building, and the owner also happens to be a passionate collector of pieces from the era. The timeless allure<\/a> of Deco ended up carrying through the whole project.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe didn\u2019t waste a lot of time figuring out what direction to go in,\u201d says Farmer. \u201cIt was nice because we were able to hit the ground running.\u201d<\/p>\n

A cabinet by Art Deco master \u00c9mile-Jacques Ruhlmann sits in the corner of the living room. The vintage French chairs were reupholstered in bronze velvet from Holland & Sherry with custom contrast piping from Rose Uniacke.<\/p>\n

Farmer began working on the project in early 2024, and the first step was tackling the floors. \u201cI always start off projects with rugs to set the palette,\u201d she says. For the living room, she used a golden-brown floor covering from Steven King<\/a> that incorporates organic motifs in silver and copper hues. Jewel-toned rugs provided further color cues in the dining room and office.<\/p>\n

A bench by Carlo Bugatti is paired with a hexagonal side table by Philip and Kelvin LaVerne. The portrait is believed to have been painted by a Renaissance master.<\/p>\n

Wall treatments were next. \u201cFor the living room, we went with parchment wall coverings and leaned into the Deco quality that they would imbue,\u201d says Farmer. The entry hall, meanwhile, is sheathed with white plaster fluting, and the primary bedroom features a Loro Piana<\/a> stripe.<\/p>\n

A bespoke de Gournay design covers the dining room walls. The space also features a 1930s Italian light fixture, French Art Deco dining table, and mid-century modern mahogany and faux-leather chairs.<\/p>\n

A show-stopping moment comes in the dining room, where Farmer installed a gilded de Gournay<\/a> wallpaper with swirling tendrils and sharp angled lines. \u201cWe wanted the space to have a glimmer and elegance to it,\u201d she says. The bespoke design draws from the artwork of Imperial Japan<\/a> as well as Art Deco master Jean Dunand.<\/p>\n

In terms of the furnishings and decor, Farmer estimates that 90 percent are antique or vintage, sourced from galleries like Maison Gerard<\/a> and Newel<\/a>, as well as 1stDibs.<\/a> \u201cThe client is a real collector and is great at finding interesting pieces,\u201d she says. \u201cIt was a giant effort between both of us.\u201d<\/p>\n

Farmer and the client also acquired blue-chip design works for the residence, including a striking \u00c9mile-Jacques Ruhlmann cabinet in the living room, a patinated bronze table by Philip and Kelvin LaVerne, a Jules Leleu desk chair, and a Carlo Bugatti bench.<\/p>\n

The office features a leather-topped oval desk by Fritz Nagel from Bel \u00c9tage as well as a Jules Leleu chair. \u201cThe desk chair is interesting because it\u2019s set on a pedestal base as opposed to legs,\u201d says Farmer. The blue and red artwork is titled Butterfly Blue Place (1975) by Jean Cohen.<\/p>\n

Rather than simply honoring Deco traditions, Farmer also deployed pieces that provided visual contrast. For instance, an Egyptian Revival fireplace with a pair of pharaoh busts is a foil to the living room\u2019s more streamlined shapes. \u201cWe found it early on and thought it would play off all the Deco moments,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n

The biggest obstacle? \u201cEverything had to fit the scale of the apartment,\u201d she says. \u201cEven though the design is elaborate, there\u2019s a simplicity to it as well\u2014we wanted to meet in that sweet spot.\u201d<\/p>\n
