Gold Derby poured over the upcoming schedule and selected 20 new shows that we&#8217;re most excited to see, a group that includes prestige awards plays, addictive dramas and broadly commercial comedies. And since some of the same people \u2014 including showrunner <strong>Greg Daniels<\/strong> and <strong>N\u00fa\u00f1ez <\/strong>back in the creative mix \u2014 The Paper could be the rare spin-off that successfully turns the page on a previous hit.<\/p>\n<p>Task (Sept. 7), HBO Max<\/p>\n<p><strong>Who\u2019s in it: Mark Ruffalo<\/strong>, <strong>Tom Pelphrey<\/strong>, <strong>Emilia Jones<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>What\u2019s the story:<\/strong> Ruffalo\u2019s dogged FBI agent heads up a squad dedicated to tracking and capturing a Pennsylvania resident who happens to be a family man by day\u2026 and a thief by night. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>Why we\u2019re excited: <\/strong>Mare of Easttown creator <strong>Brad Ingelsby<\/strong> returns to the scene of his hit crime series, which won multiple Emmys and produced one of the best <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=qaKZi6p6sxg\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Saturday Night Live <\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=qaKZi6p6sxg\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">parodies in recent memory<\/a>. Equaling or surpassing that success might be a tall task, but we have a feeling that Ingelsby and Ruffalo will hit the target.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.goldderby.com\/t\/the-girlfriend\/\" id=\"auto-tag_the-girlfriend\" data-tag=\"the-girlfriend\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Girlfriend<\/a> (Sept. 10), Prime Video<\/p>\n<p><strong>Who\u2019s in it:<\/strong> <strong>Robin Wright<\/strong>, <strong>Olivia Cooke<\/strong>, <strong>Laurie Davidson<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>What\u2019s the story:<\/strong> When Danny (Davidson) brings his new girlfriend (Cooke) home for a visit, his mother Laura (Wright) has a very bad reaction to the new woman in her midst.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Why we\u2019re excited: <\/strong>Not since <strong>Ben Stiller<\/strong> had his first meet-and-greet with <strong>Robert De Niro<\/strong> has a \u201cmeet the parents\u201d encounter had the potential to go so far off the rails. Besides starring in the six-episode series, Wright also directed the first three chapters and her previous work behind the camera on House of Cards and Ozark demonstrates that she\u2019s got a good eye for thrills.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.goldderby.com\/t\/tempest\/\" id=\"auto-tag_tempest\" data-tag=\"tempest\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Tempest<\/a> (Sept. 10), Hulu<\/p>\n<p><strong>Who\u2019s in it:<\/strong> <strong>Jun Ji-hyun<\/strong>, <strong>Gang Dong-won<\/strong>, <strong>John Cho<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>What\u2019s the story:<\/strong> After a deadly attack inches North and South Korea closer towards war, a diplomat (Jun) and a special agent (Gang) join forces to uncover the real guilty party.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Why we\u2019re excited:<\/strong> <strong>Park Chan-wook<\/strong>\u2019s frequent collaborator <strong>Jeong Seo-kyeong<\/strong> crafts her latest solo story and brings Cho into the mix alongside a cast of top South Korean stars. After Squid Game\u2019s disappointing final season, we\u2019re ready to get caught up in a killer spy game.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.goldderby.com\/t\/black-rabbit\/\" id=\"auto-tag_black-rabbit\" data-tag=\"black-rabbit\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Black Rabbit<\/a> (Sept. 18), Netflix<\/p>\n<p><strong>Who\u2019s in it:<\/strong> <strong>Jude Law<\/strong>, <strong>Jason Bateman<\/strong>, <strong>Cleopatra Coleman<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>What\u2019s the story: <\/strong>Two brothers (Law and Bateman) get thrown into New York\u2019s seedy underworld as they attempt to keep the doors open and the lights on at their titular restaurant.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Why we\u2019re excited:<\/strong> Bateman trades the backwoods of the Ozarks for the mean streets of Manhattan \u2014 what\u2019s not to like? It helps that meaty roles for Coleman, Oscar winner <strong>Troy Kotsur<\/strong> and Gilded Age zaddy <strong>Morgan Spector<\/strong> are also on the menu.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.goldderby.com\/t\/the-lowdown\/\" id=\"auto-tag_the-lowdown\" data-tag=\"the-lowdown\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Lowdown<\/a> (Sept. 23), FX on Hulu<\/p>\n<p><strong>Who\u2019s in it: Ethan Hawke<\/strong>, <strong>Ryan Kiera Armstrong<\/strong>, <strong>Tim Blake Nelson<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>What\u2019s the story: <\/strong>A Tulsa-based bookseller digs up dirt on one of the town\u2019s most powerful families, potentially putting his business and life in jeopardy.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Why we\u2019re excited:<\/strong> <strong>Sterlin Harjo<\/strong>\u2019s Reservation Dogs remains one of the best TV series of the 2020s, and there\u2019s every reason to expect that he\u2019ll avoid a sophomore slump \u2014 especially with ace actors like Hawke and Nelson in the mix. Look for supporting players <strong>Jeanne Tripplehorn<\/strong> and <strong>Kyle MacLachlan<\/strong> to deliver additional intrigue\u2026 and awards potential.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.goldderby.com\/t\/wayward\/\" id=\"auto-tag_wayward\" data-tag=\"wayward\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Wayward<\/a> (Sept. 25), Netflix<\/p>\n<p><strong>Who\u2019s in it: Toni Collette<\/strong>, <strong>Sydney Topliffe<\/strong>, <strong>Alyvia Alyn Lind<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>What\u2019s the story: <\/strong>Abby (Topliffe) and Lelia (Lind) are early 2000s teen rebels without a cause who suddenly find themselves shipped off to a reform school overseen by Collette\u2019s suspect educator. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>Why we\u2019re excited:<\/strong> Every generation needs its version of Reform School Girls and Canada\u2019s own <strong>Mae Martin<\/strong> \u2014 known for shows like Feel Good and the Handsome Podcast \u2014 is poised to deliver the Gen-Z\/Gen-A take. Watching him apply that craft to the 19th century brewery world should be a heady experience. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.goldderby.com\/t\/the-savant\/\" id=\"auto-tag_the-savant\" data-tag=\"the-savant\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Savant<\/a> (Sept. 26), Apple TV+<\/p>\n<p><strong>Who\u2019s in it:<\/strong> <strong>Jessica Chastain<\/strong>, <strong>Jordana Spiro<\/strong>, <strong>Pablo Schreiber<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>What\u2019s the story:<\/strong> A terror-preventing savant (Chastain) embeds herself in an extremist group before they can carry out a mass casualty event. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>Why we\u2019re excited:<\/strong> That premise puts Chastain back in Zero Dark Thirty territory \u2014 and that means Emmy nominations are very likely in her future. That gives him the edge in making what could be the best football series since the glory days of Friday Night Lights.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.goldderby.com\/t\/it-welcome-to-derry\/\" id=\"auto-tag_it-welcome-to-derry\" data-tag=\"it-welcome-to-derry\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">It: Welcome to Derry<\/a> (Oct. TBD), HBO Max<\/p>\n<p><strong>Who\u2019s in it: Taylour Paige<\/strong>, <strong>Jovan Adepo<\/strong>, <strong>Bill Skarsg\u00e5rd<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>What\u2019s the story: <\/strong>Decades before the Losers Club took on Pennywise (the first time), <strong>Stephen King<\/strong>\u2019s killer clown from outer space feeds on a different group of Derry youngsters.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Why we\u2019re excited:<\/strong> Warner Bros. is keeping the It franchise all in the family by bringing <strong>Andy<\/strong> and <strong>Barbara Muschietti<\/strong> back to preqeulize their blockbuster two-part adaptation of one of America\u2019s best-loved boogeyman\u2019s best-known books. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.goldderby.com\/tv\/2025\/it-welcome-to-derry-pennywise-andy-muschietti-hbo\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">And based on the San Diego Comic-Con panel<\/a>, they\u2019ll be bringing the scares \u2014 and the Skarsg\u00e5rd \u2014 back with them.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.goldderby.com\/t\/boots\/\" id=\"auto-tag_boots\" data-tag=\"boots\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Boots<\/a> (Oct. 9), Netflix<\/p>\n<p><strong>Who\u2019s in it: Miles Heizer<\/strong>, <strong>Liam Oh<\/strong>, <strong>Vera Farmiga<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>What\u2019s the story:<\/strong> Eager to escape his dead-end small town, a still-closeted gay teenager enlists in the Marines\u2026 but has to keep his sexuality secret during the height of the military\u2019s \u201cdon\u2019t ask, don\u2019t tell\u201d era.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Why we\u2019re excited: <\/strong>One of the final projects from legendary producer, <strong>Norman Lear<\/strong>, Boots is based on the life story of former Marine, <strong>Greg Cope White<\/strong>. And against the backdrop of real-world headlines, the show\u2019s emphasis on how diversity in the military makes us \u2014 and the U.S. \u2014 stronger will hopefully resonate at home and abroad.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.goldderby.com\/t\/the-last-frontier\/\" id=\"auto-tag_the-last-frontier\" data-tag=\"the-last-frontier\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Last Frontier<\/a> (Oct. 10), Apple TV+<\/p>\n<p><strong>Who\u2019s in it:<\/strong> <strong>Jason Clarke<\/strong>, <strong>Dominic Cooper<\/strong>, <strong>Haley Bennett<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>What\u2019s the story:<\/strong> After a prison transport plane crashes in his neck of the Alaskan woods, Clarke\u2019s U.S. Marshal has to round up the surviving convicts\u2026 including the one who masterminded the jailbreak.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Why we\u2019re excited:<\/strong> It\u2019s been awhile since we\u2019ve had a good prison break series \u2014 maybe since the Prison Break revival, in fact. The addition of the Alaskan frontier should make this particular version of that story extra frosty. \u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.goldderby.com\/t\/devil-in-disguise-john-wayne-gacy\/\" id=\"auto-tag_devil-in-disguise-john-wayne-gacy\" data-tag=\"devil-in-disguise-john-wayne-gacy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Devil in Disguise: John Wayne Gacy<\/a> (Oct. 16), Peacock<\/p>\n<p><strong>Who\u2019s in it:<\/strong> <strong>Michael Chernus<\/strong>, <strong>Gabriel Luna<\/strong>, <strong>James Badge Dale<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>What\u2019s the story:<\/strong> Peacock makes its own Monster by dramatizing the bloody exploits of another notorious American serial killer.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Why we\u2019re excited: <\/strong>With former newsman-turned-screenwriter <strong>Noah Oppenheim<\/strong> onboard as an executive producer, Devil may avoid some of the ickier creative choices that inspired controversies around <strong>Ryan Murphy<\/strong>\u2019s serialized serial killer series on Netflix. And after scene-stealing supporting turns on shows like Severance and Dead Ringers, Chernus is overdue for a marquee role that really lets him slay.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.goldderby.com\/t\/talamasca-the-secret-order\/\" id=\"auto-tag_talamasca-the-secret-order\" data-tag=\"talamasca-the-secret-order\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Talamasca: The Secret Order<\/a> (Oct. 26), AMC<\/p>\n<p><strong>Who\u2019s in it:<\/strong> <strong>Elizabeth McGovern<\/strong>, <strong>William Fichtner<\/strong>, <strong>Nicholas Denton<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>What\u2019s the story: <\/strong>A law school graduate (Denton) gives up a legal career to join the titular secret society that\u2019s dedicated to hunting vampires, demons and other things that go bump in the night.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Why we\u2019re excited:<\/strong> As AMC\u2019s <strong>Anne Rice <\/strong>universe continues to expand outwards, it pulls in noted thespians like McGovern, Fichtner and <strong>Jason Schwartzman<\/strong>. Garfield, whose time in office was cut short by an assassin\u2019s bullet.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Why we\u2019re excited:<\/strong> This specific slice of American history has rarely been dramatized, which gives the creative team lots of leeway in bringing the past to life. And with its hirsute male leads, the period beards alone will be award-worthy.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.goldderby.com\/t\/pluribus\/\" id=\"auto-tag_pluribus\" data-tag=\"pluribus\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Pluribus<\/a> (Nov. 7), Apple TV+<\/p>\n<p><strong>Who\u2019s in it: Rhea Seehorn<\/strong>, <strong>Karolina Wydra<\/strong>, <strong>Carlos Manuel Vesga<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>What\u2019s the story:<\/strong> As a happiness epidemic prepares to drown Earth in good vibes, it\u2019s up to a truly miserable person (Seehorn) to keep our emotions in check.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Why we\u2019re excited:<\/strong> Better call <strong>Vince Gilligan<\/strong>. The Breaking Bad maestro returns to his X-Files roots with a series that appears to blend science-fiction with bone-dry comedy.
