El Salvador has transferred its national Bitcoin holdings to a series of new addresses, citing emerging quantum computing threats as the primary reason for the security overhaul. The move, first reported by Yahoo Finance<\/a>, involves redistributing the country’s 6,286 BTC, valued at approximately $686 million, from a single transparent address into multiple addresses, each holding a maximum of 500 BTC.<\/p>\n

The country’s National Bitcoin Office<\/a> stated that the theoretical capability of quantum computers to break public-private key cryptography using Shor’s algorithm posed a significant risk. When a Bitcoin transaction is signed, the public key becomes visible on the blockchain, potentially exposing it to attacks that could redirect funds. By splitting the reserve and limiting the funds in each address, the government aims to minimize the potential impact of such an attack, as unused addresses with hashed public keys remain protected.<\/p>\n

This strategic shift occurs against a backdrop of ongoing discussions with the International Monetary Fund (IMF). In a July statement, the IMF noted that Salvadoran authorities had committed “not to voluntarily accumulate Bitcoin,” a condition tied to a financial assistance package. However, the government’s press office has since confirmed it will continue its policy of purchasing 1 BTC per day.
