JACKSONVILLE, Fla.<\/strong> \u2013 Pharmacy closures on Jacksonville\u2019s Northside are forcing families to wait days \u2014 and even weeks \u2014 to get critical medications.<\/p>\n

Recently, Walgreens closed its Gateway and Soutel stores, and with Harvey\u2019s supermarkets being converted into Aldi\u2019s, there are now only two major pharmacies left in the area.<\/p>\n

District leaders said the shortage is creating dangerous delays for thousands of people.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe only Walgreens that\u2019s open is the one here on Lem Turner Road and Lem Turner and Dunn, so just imagine all of the thousands of people who are now just coming to this Walgreens,\u201d Councilwoman Ju\u2019Coby Pittman said.<\/p>\n

From long lines in the store and drive-thru to missing prescriptions, Pittman said she\u2019s seeing the impact firsthand.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve witnessed this myself. Several customers are coming in and saying that they\u2019re dropping off their prescriptions, and they\u2019re getting a text stating that their prescription is ready, and then when they get here, it\u2019s not here or it\u2019s lost,\u201d Pittman said. \u201cI even have prescriptions that I haven\u2019t had filled, because every time I come, the lines are so long, it\u2019s an issue, it\u2019s a problem.\u201d<\/p>\n

That problem quickly becomes personal for families who need urgent care.<\/p>\n

News4JAX spoke with a resident who said her sister had surgery recently, and it took 14 days to get her pain medicine.<\/p>\n

\u201cBecause they never had enough medication in stock to fill hers,\u201d she said. \u201cThe last day, when we finally got it, I told her, \u2018OK, enough is enough. I went and sat up there. Eventually, four hours later, they called me to the window and gave me her medication.\u201d<\/p>\n

Now she said her sister is scared of this happening again.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe\u2019s so scared that if she needs more medication, she can\u2019t get it filled in time,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

Pittman said she\u2019s pushing Walgreens corporate to address the staffing and supply shortages and she\u2019s urging residents to keep speaking out.<\/p>\n

News4JAX reached out to Walgreens for comment, and at the time of this publication, we hadn\u2019t heard back.<\/p>\n
