Photo by Gus Saltonstall<\/p>\n<p><strong>By West Side Rag<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A horse pulling a carriage escaped its handler Monday in Central Park, knocking down a traffic sign and forcing passengers to jump out of the vehicle to escape, dramatic video of the event shows.<\/p>\n<p>The runaway horse got loose on Labor Day near the Central Park Dairy building, close to the 65th Street<a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/maps\/place\/The+Dairy+Visitor+Center+and+Gift+Shop\/@40.7700489,-73.9784401,16.7z\/data=!4m9!1m2!2m1!1s65th+street+transverse+central+park!3m5!1s0x89c258f22ef652c7:0x69187ab2be8c1884!8m2!3d40.7691158!4d-73.9736962!16s%2Fg%2F1hd_tl1ls?entry=ttu&amp;g_ep=EgoyMDI1MDgyNS4wIKXMDSoASAFQAw%3D%3D\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\"> Transverse Road<\/a>, according to video posted on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/DOEQbLoEdC0\/?hl=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Stopping NYC Horse Abuse Instagram page.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Video shows the horse pulling a carriage with no driver; the horse runs over a crosswalk sign before continuing down the road as passengers jump out of the back, and a man, presumably the horse\u2019s handler, runs behind the cart yelling out.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCall 911,\u201d an eyewitness says.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"instagram-media\" style=\"background: #FFF; border: 0; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: 0 0 1px 0 rgba(0,0,0,0.5),0 1px 10px 0 rgba(0,0,0,0.15); margin: 1px; max-width: 540px; min-width: 326px; padding: 0; width: calc(100% - 2px);\" data-instgrm-captioned=\"\" data-instgrm-permalink=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/reel\/DOEQbLoEdC0\/?utm_source=ig_embed&amp;utm_campaign=loading\" data-instgrm-version=\"14\">\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>\u201cMoments ago in Central Park, a terrified horse spooked and bolted out of control, dragging a carriage full of customers and smashing through a stop sign, garbage cans, and other objects in its path,\u201d reads the caption on the Stopping NYC Horse Abuse Instagram account.<\/p>\n<p>A spokesperson from the Central Park Conservancy confirmed to West Side Rag that the horse has been contained as of 3:20 p.m.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPlease read our letter from last month on why carriage horses no longer belong in Central Park,\u201d the spokesperson wrote in an email to the Rag. \u201c<a id=\"m_3298478871532840144LPlnk902497\" title=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/DOEQbLoEdC0\/?hl=en\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/DOEQbLoEdC0\/?hl=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/DOEQbLoEdC0\/?hl%3Den&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1756841058677000&amp;usg=AOvVaw0QjF4UMNZgcLkM9TI3xUGX\">Today\u2019s incident<\/a>\u00a0only underscores our concern about the dangers posed by horses in the increasingly crowded Park.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The runaway horse comes weeks after the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westsiderag.com\/2025\/08\/12\/for-the-first-time-central-park-conservancy-calls-for-end-of-horse-drawn-carriages-in-the-park#:~:text=By%20West%20Side%20Rag&amp;text=%E2%80%9CWe%20do%20not%20take%20this,and%20safety%20for%20Park%20visitors.%E2%80%9D\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">conservancy publicly called<\/a> for the first time for the end of horse-drawn carriages in Central Park.
