\n\tGraham Greene<\/a>, a trailblazing Canadian First Nations actor who opened doors for Indigenous actors in Hollywood, died September 1 in a Toronto hospital after a long illness. The Oscar nominee from Dances with Wolves<\/a> was 73.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cHe was a great man of morals, ethics and character and will be eternally missed,\u201d Greene\u2019s agent Michael Greene (no relation) said in a statement to Deadline. \u201cYou are finally free. Susan Smith is meeting you at the gates of heaven,\u201d he added, referencing the actor\u2019s longtime agent, who died in 2013.<\/p>\n

\n\tGreene was born on June 22, 1952 in Ohsweken, on the Six Nations Reserve. He worked odd jobs before giving acting a go. Greene started on stage, and by the 1970s he was performing in Canadian and English professional theater productions.<\/p>\n

\n\tHe made his screen debut in 1979 in an episode of the Canadian drama series The Great Detective; his first movie was the 1983 Running Brave.<\/p>\n

\n\tGreene\u2019s big breakthrough came several years later when Kevin Costner cast him as Kicking Bird (Zi\u014btk\u00e1 Nagw\u00e1ka), one the main characters in his 1990 Western Dances with Wolves. The film landed 12 Academy Award nominations \u2014 including one for Greene as Best Supporting Actor \u2014 and won seven, including Best Picture.<\/p>\n

\n\tDances with Wolves launched Greene\u2019s Hollywood career. He went on to appear in such high-profile features as Maverick (1994) with Mel Gibson and Jodie Foster, Die Hard with a Vengeance (1995) with Bruce Willis, The Green Mile (1999) with Tom Hanks, The Twilight Saga: New Moon (2009) with Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson as well as Aaron Sorkin\u2019s Molly\u2019s Game (2017) with Jessica Chastain,\u00a0Idris Elba and Costner.<\/p>\n

\n\tGraham also had main roles in Thunderheart (1992) opposite Val Kilmer, Transamerica (2005) opposite Felicity Huffman, and Taylor Sheridan\u2019s Wind River<\/a> (2017) opposite Jeremy Renner and Elizabeth Olsen.<\/p>\n

\n\tSheridan subsequently cast Greene in two of his series for Paramount+: 1883 and, most recently, Tulsa King.<\/p>\n

\n\tGreene\u2019s TV series credits also include series regular roles on Wolf Lake, Defiance and Marvel\u2019s Echo and recurring stints on Northern Exposure, Lonesome Dove: The Series, Being Erica, Longmire, Goliath and American Gods. <\/p>\n

\n\tIn addition to his Oscar nomination, Greene is a Grammy, Gemini and Canadian Screen Award winner and Independent Spirit nominee. He has a star on Canada\u2019s Walk of Fame and, earlier this year, received the Governor General\u2019s Performing Arts Award in his native country.<\/p>\n

\n\tFittingly, one of Greene\u2019s final roles was on FX\u2019s acclaimed series Reservation Dogs, which built on his legacy of breaking barriers for Indigenous talent in Hollywood.<\/p>\n

\n\tGreene, who worked until the end, has one upcoming movie in the can: thriller Ice Fall starring Joel Kinnaman.<\/p>\n
