<\/a><\/p>\nStories of Honor is a Fort Worth Report weekly series spotlighting 12 Tarrant County veterans<\/a> who are serving beyond the uniform.<\/p>\n We also are highlighting nonprofits<\/a> recommended by the veterans.<\/p>\n In November, the veterans will gather for a luncheon where the Report will honor their service at the National Medal of Honor Museum in Arlington.<\/p>\n For Williams, a quote from Atticus Finch in \u201cTo Kill a Mockingbird\u201d foreshadowed the most important tool she needed to navigate life:\u00a0<\/p>\n \u201cI wanted you to see what real courage is. It\u2019s when you know you\u2019re licked before you begin but you begin anyway and you see it through no matter what.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n Courage.<\/p>\n It took courage to leave her family and serve her country. Determined to be a role model for her younger brothers, that drive led her to enlist in the U.S. Army, first on active duty and later in the National Guard.\u00a0<\/p>\n Now 18 years into her education career, Williams is a leader, advocate and mentor in Fort Worth ISD. From helping students with disabilities find employment and mentoring fellow educators, she brings discipline and compassion into every classroom she visits while leading with courage.<\/p>\n Enlisted as a private, Williams rose to private first class and then specialist in the Army. She later earned a promotion to sergeant in the Texas Army National Guard.\u00a0<\/p>\n Stationed in Hawaii with the 25th Infantry Division, she deployed to Thailand and worked in personnel information systems. The military taught her discipline, teamwork and, \u201cintestinal fortitude,\u201d the ability to push forward, even in uncertainty.<\/p>\n \u201cKnowing my history, and the struggles of my ancestors made me understand that failure was not an option,\u201d Williams said.\u00a0<\/p>\n Transitioning to civilian life was tough. Jobs did not come easy, and depression followed. Counseling helped, but it was a nonprofit job that gave her courage and purpose.\u00a0<\/p>\n She joined Bridges from School to Work, a Marriott Foundation program that helps students with disabilities find employment.<\/p>\n \u201cThat job was so important, because when you motivated the child to work, sometimes it motivated other people in the house to work,\u201d Williams said. \u201cI was helping on different levels.\u201d<\/p>\n While working with students, Williams noticed that many wanted a job, but lacked the skills to succeed. That realization nudged her toward education.<\/p>\n \u201cHow can I help these students get what they need and also help the community?\u201d she said.<\/p>\n In 2005, Williams joined the Bridges program in Dallas to help students with disabilities find jobs. After noticing their skill gaps, she became a transition services teacher, helping students develop job and life skills.<\/p>\n She then served as a high school special education inclusion teacher and department chair. She is now a special education compliance coordinator for Fort Worth ISD.<\/p>\n Her role involves guiding campus teams and ensuring students receive the services they need. For Williams, it\u2019s a calling.\u00a0<\/p>\n Jacqueline London, an educational diagnostician in Fort Worth ISD, called Williams a servant leader who goes beyond her job description. London recalled a moment when around 100 students with disabilities arrived at school without schedules or placements.\u00a0<\/p>\n \u201cShe couldn\u2019t sleep knowing those kids were just sitting there,\u201d London said. \u201cShe came and got them all placed. That\u2019s who she is.\u201d<\/p>\n Williams\u2019 military background is evident, London said.<\/p>\n \u201cShe rolls up her sleeves and it\u2019s boots on the ground.\u201d<\/p>\n Williams credits her teachers for shaping her path. In high school, she was part of community service programs like the Spark Teen Program and Peer Assistance and Leadership.<\/p>\n \u201cMy teachers saved my life,\u201d Williams said. \u201cThey believed in me when I didn\u2019t know the potential that I had.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n One of those teachers, Lou Love, taught Williams during her freshman and sophomore years. Love\u2019s classroom explored themes of justice and identity through literature like \u201cTo Kill a Mockingbird,\u201d \u201cRomeo and Juliet\u201d and \u201cNo News from Auschwitz.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cShe always tells me, \u2018You opened my third eye,\u2019\u201d Love said. \u201cShe\u2019s outdone anything I ever thought she would do. She\u2019s one of my success stories.\u201d<\/p>\n Emian Williams<\/p>\n Age: <\/strong>46<\/p>\n Military service: <\/strong>U.S. Army <\/p>\n Occupation: <\/strong>Special education coordinator-compliance for Fort Worth ISD<\/p>\n Education: <\/strong>Bachelor\u2019s degree in political science from the University of Texas at Arlington. Master\u2019s in special education from Texas Tech University.<\/p>\n Family: <\/strong>Daughter of Celestine and Ricki Johnson. Four brothers, Edward Williams, Chris Williams, Kelvin Williams and Christopher Johnson.\u00a0<\/p>\n Most important lesson learned in the military:<\/strong> \u201cNever give up. Even when it gets hard, never give up. And be open to counseling.\u201d<\/p>\n Williams\u2019 journey hasn\u2019t been without personal trials. After years of serving others, she faced one of her toughest battles \u2014 breast cancer.\u00a0<\/p>\n Once again, courage guided her.\u00a0<\/p>\n From mentorship to earning two degrees as a first-generation college graduate to serving in the Army and beating cancer, Williams has lived by the principle of showing up, even when the odds are stacked against her.\u00a0<\/p>\n She still introduces families to the Bridges program, hoping to spark the same transformation she experienced nearly 20 years ago.\u00a0<\/p>\n \u201cMy teachers planted a seed in me,\u201d Williams said. \u201cNow I water it by serving others.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n For Williams, real courage isn\u2019t about winning. It\u2019s about doing the hard thing, and pushing forward.\u00a0<\/p>\n \u201cYou rarely win,\u201d she said, echoing \u201cTo Kill a Mockingbird,\u201d \u201cbut sometimes you do.\u201d<\/p>\n And when you do, she said, you change lives.<\/p>\n Orlando Torres is a reporting fellow for the Fort Worth Report.
