{"id":193261,"date":"2025-09-02T04:57:09","date_gmt":"2025-09-02T04:57:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/193261\/"},"modified":"2025-09-02T04:57:09","modified_gmt":"2025-09-02T04:57:09","slug":"recruitment-numbers-rise-for-phoenix-pd-but-retainment-remains-a-question","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/193261\/","title":{"rendered":"Recruitment numbers rise for Phoenix PD, but retainment remains a question"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"text | text-start article-text\"><b>PHOENIX (AZFamily)<\/b> \u2014 As Phoenix Police Chief Matt Giordano <a href=\"https:\/\/www.azfamily.com\/2025\/08\/28\/phoenix-police-chief-matt-giordano-be-sworn\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.azfamily.com\/2025\/08\/28\/phoenix-police-chief-matt-giordano-be-sworn\/\">begins his tenure<\/a>, recruitment and retention will be a major task in the months and years to come.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">Out of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.phoenix.gov\/content\/dam\/phoenix\/citymanagersite\/documents\/Phoenix%20Police%20Chief%20Brochure.pdf\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.phoenix.gov\/content\/dam\/phoenix\/citymanagersite\/documents\/Phoenix%20Police%20Chief%20Brochure.pdf\">3,125 sworn positions<\/a> the department anticipates having as outlined in the budget through July 2025, only 2,500 sworn positions are filled, with 135 recruits on top of that.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">\u201cWe have some squads in more busy areas of town where we\u2019ve got four and five officers when historically we\u2019ve had 10 to 12 officers in that squad area,\u201d said <a href=\"https:\/\/azplea.com\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/azplea.com\/\">Phoenix Law Enforcement Association<\/a> President Darrell Kriplean.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">Kriplean says the 2020 protests and public perception of police officers hurt departments all over the country, including in Phoenix, when it came to recruiting.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">But a new report from Phoenix Police on recruitment, hiring, and attrition shows that through the end of July this year, 3,091 people have applied to become recruits with the department, which is already more than in all of 2024.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">\u201cI think that ship is turning, and I think that we are doing a very good job of promoting the police department as a stable income, a good place to work, a good way to support families,\u201d said Kriplean.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">The total number of lateral and reinstatement applicants is also on pace to be greater in 2025 compared to 2024, but recruitment is only part of the equation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">\u201cMy concern would be, you know, what\u2019s happening with the folks that are eligible to retire here in the next two or three months?
