{"id":193401,"date":"2025-09-02T06:11:11","date_gmt":"2025-09-02T06:11:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/193401\/"},"modified":"2025-09-02T06:11:11","modified_gmt":"2025-09-02T06:11:11","slug":"penn-launches-new-scholars-program-to-foster-connection-with-pa-communities","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/193401\/","title":{"rendered":"Penn launches new scholars program to foster connection with Pa. communities"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\t\t\t\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thedp.com\/multimedia\/13d13ecf-cd8f-444c-b055-a7cce347a19b\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><br \/>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"img img-responsive img-fill\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/eb09ceab-9c67-4ff3-8f57-4f3ec8386eee.sized-1000x1000.jpg\" alt=\"10-07-24-locust-walk-chenyao-liu-2\"\/><br \/>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The Penn Commonwealth-Engaged Scholars Program helps Penn faculty and staff strengthen connections between the University and communities across Pennsylvania.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tCredit: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thedp.com\/staff\/chenyao-liu\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Chenyao Liu<\/a> \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>Penn Commonwealth-Engaged Scholars Program, an initiative designed to bridge the gap between the University and communities across the state, announced its inaugural slate of faculty and staff last week.\u00a0\n<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nursing.upenn.edu\/live\/news\/3145university-of-pennsylvania-launches-new-statewide\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">PCES program<\/a> recently selected its first cohort of faculty, who will participate in \u201ceducational briefings to learn about the state\u2019s history, political structure, and regional socio-economic differences.\u201d The initiative will also feature in-person interactions with Pennsylvania community members to learn more about \u201cdistinct geographic, demographic, economic, industrial, cultural, and political regions,\u201d according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nursing.upenn.edu\/live\/news\/3145university-of-pennsylvania-launches-new-statewide\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Penn Nursing\u2019s announcement<\/a>.\n\t\t<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe goal of the Penn Commonwealth-Engaged Scholars program is to anchor our university in the lives of the people we serve,\u201d Penn Nursing Dean Antonia Villarruel wrote. \u201cWe are weaving our knowledge and innovation into the fabric of every community across the Commonwealth.\u201d\n<\/p>\n<p>Lia Howard, who directs Penn\u2019s SNF Paideia Fellows program, Michael Smith, the Senior Director of Commonwealth Relations at the Office of Government and Community Affairs, and Senior Associate Vice President for Alumni Relations Hoopes Wampler will also help lead the initiative.\u00a0\n\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>Smith also noted the importance of Penn\u2019s involvement in the Pennsylvania community while describing the goals of PCES.\n<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn many ways, Pennsylvania is a microcosm of the US. Many of the pressing public problems confronting the Commonwealth can be found in many other states,\u201d Smith wrote. \u201cPCES is an opportunity for our incredible faculty and staff to see these problems up close and in person so that they can apply their expertise to better society. This program will clearly demonstrate Penn\u2019s commitment to the goals of In Principle and Practice.\u201d\n\t<\/p>\n<p>PCES receives funding from a Draw Down the Lightning grant, as part of \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thedp.com\/article\/2023\/11\/penn-strategic-framework-principle-practice-magill\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">In Principle and Practice<\/a>,\u201d a strategic framework announced by the University in 2023. According to <a href=\"https:\/\/in-principle-and-practice.upenn.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">a webpage for the plan<\/a>, the plan\u2019s purpose is to \u201ccapture what the world needs from Penn and how we will cultivate a community that rises to the challenge.\u201d\n<\/p>\n<p>The program is also set to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nursing.upenn.edu\/live\/news\/3145university-of-pennsylvania-launches-new-statewide\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">prioritize<\/a> sustainable connections between Penn and Pennsylvania communities while maintaining the University\u2019s \u201cleadership as a premier research, teaching, and service partner.\u201d\n<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe PCES program is our way of looking closer, listening harder, and seeing the strengths and needs of diverse regions,\u201d Villarruel wrote. \u201cIt is an invitation to our faculty and staff to form relationships that are not transactional but transformational.
