\n\tAfter more than five years of speculation about Shane Gillis<\/a>\u2018 exit from Saturday Night Live<\/a>, Bowen Yang<\/a> has found himself in the middle of a culture war.<\/p>\n

\n\tThe 5x Emmy nominee recently called Gillis a \u201cfunny guy\u201d and clarified they have a \u201cmutual respect,\u201d despite being pitted against each other over the circumstances of Gillis\u2019 ousting from the NBC<\/a> sketch comedy show in 2019.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cBoth of us have had to navigate being used,\u201d Yang told host Marc Maron<\/a> on the WTF<\/a> podcast. \u201cI think there was like a recruitment going on either side of like, \u2018If you like this guy, then this is what you stand for, and if you like this guy, then this is what you stand for.\u2019 And I think both of us are probably a little more dimensional than that.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tGillis was announced as a featured cast member<\/a> on SNL in 2019, along with Yang and Chloe Fineman. He was removed from the cast<\/a> shortly afterward when his past anti-Chinese and anti-gay jokes<\/a> resurfaced, none of which mentioned Yang.<\/p>\n

\n\tYang noted on the podcast that he and Gillis talked at the time and bonded over being used for headlines. He\u2019s previously shut down accusations<\/a> that he got Gillis fired from the cast.<\/p>\n

\n\tLast October, creator Lorne Michaels<\/a> told the Wall Street Journal that Gillis\u2019 termination was NBC\u2019s decision<\/a>. \u201cThat was very strong from the people in charge. And obviously I was not on that side, but I understood it,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
