{"id":193861,"date":"2025-09-02T10:24:14","date_gmt":"2025-09-02T10:24:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/193861\/"},"modified":"2025-09-02T10:24:14","modified_gmt":"2025-09-02T10:24:14","slug":"scranton-native-marywood-alum-brings-stanley-cup-to-campus","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/193861\/","title":{"rendered":"Scranton native, Marywood alum brings Stanley Cup to campus"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>DUNMORE \u2014 A throng of supporters cheered as Mike Joyce hoisted the Stanley Cup above his head while walking through the doors of Marywood University\u2019s O\u2019Neill Center for Healthy Families on Monday afternoon.<\/p>\n<p>Joyce, a 2017 Marywood graduate, who serves as the head strength and conditioning coach for the two-time defending National Hockey League champion Florida Panthers, brought the hallowed trophy back to campus as hundreds of people waited in line to get their picture taken with it \u2014 part of a long-standing hockey tradition that allows each player, coach and staff member of the winning team to celebrate in their own unique way.<\/p>\n<p>Seeing the line of students, hockey fans, family and friends snake through the building and out into the parking lot left an impression on Joyce.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt makes me very happy to see the outpouring of support, not just for me but for the university itself,\u201d he said. \u201cIt really means so much to me to bring (the Cup) back to Scranton and celebrate with the people who supported me up to this point.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Scranton native credits his education at Marywood University \u2014 where he earned a degree in exercise science \u2014 for putting him on a path for success and praised Shelby Yeager, dean of the College of Health Sciences, for helping him break into the hockey business.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI received such a wonderful education here,\u201d Joyce said. \u201cI was given every opportunity, every resource imaginable here at the university. I really can\u2019t thank Shelby enough. She brought an internship opportunity to me with the Wilkes-Barre\/Scranton Penguins, and that\u2019s how I got my start. (CHAD SEBRING\/STAFF PHOTO)\n<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"#\" class=\"icon-enlarge mng-gallery-fullscreen-expand\" aria-label=\"Expand fullscreen slideshow\">Expand<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Anthony Cerminaro of Wexford, originally of Scranton, a Pittsburgh Penguins loyalist, decided to extend his visit in Northeast Pennsylvania after learning the Stanley Cup would be in town.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI came back for La Festa (Italiana), which is also a family reunion time for us,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Cerminaro, who previously lived in the same neighborhood as Pittsburgh Penguins star Sidney Crosby, enjoyed getting an up-close look at the historic trophy.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was more excited than I thought I was going to be,\u201d he said. \u201cI have a daughter who lives in California, and she\u2019s going to be very jealous I was able to get my picture taken with the Cup.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dakota Scheetz, 22, of Mount Bethel, donning a gold Nashville Predators jersey, stood out among droves of Penguins, Philadelphia Flyers and New York Rangers fans.<\/p>\n<p>He became overjoyed upon learning about the opportunity to see the Stanley Cup in person.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think this is unbelievable,\u201d Scheetz said. \u201cI was losing my mind when I first heard. I was shaking \u2026 hockey is my life.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In his role as the Panthers\u2019 strength and conditioning coach, Joyce is tasked with several responsibilities, from carrying bags to seeking out special treats during road trips.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s really just supporting our guys, our champions,\u201d he said. \u201cDoing literally whatever it takes to make sure they\u2019re recovered, they\u2019re fed, and they\u2019re ready to go the next night.
