With that in mind, welcome to a new series we’re diving into at The Athletic this season: The 10 best things we saw in high school football. Every week, we’ll share the top highlights, plays and moments from prospects across the country.

This past week was all about the blue-chippers, but there will be plenty of room to check out some of the under-the-radar prospects, as well, as this series continues throughout the high school season.

See a play you’d like to submit for consideration? Grimsley, is arguably the top quarterback in the country and is certainly one of the most prominent faces of the 2026 class. But after leading his team to a one-point overtime victory in Week 1, Brandon was out for Week 2 and is currently dealing with a thumb injury on his throwing hand.

That prompted the Whirlies to turn to freshman Brody Lowe on Friday night, and boy, did he put on a show. The lefty — who camped at North Carolina and Liberty this summer — finished the night 18-of-29 passing for 344 yards with two touchdowns and one interception in a 31-17 win over Clemmons (N.C.) West Forsyth. Lowe hit multiple deep balls and wasn’t afraid of the moment, and he could be in charge for the next few weeks as Brandon continues to heal. Not too shabby for a guy who was in the eighth grade last year.

Brody Lowe was ready for the moment.

The Grimsley FRESHMAN threw for over 300 yards in the No. 1 Whirlies’ 31-17 win over No. 11 West Forsyth.

Highlights and more: https://t.co/o7KhUYGg0c pic.twitter.com/XeLFaCTnNU

— HighSchoolOT (@HighSchoolOT) August 30, 2025

9. Sticking with quarterbacks, how about this run from five-star Keisean Henderson?
