Also, Zegler, all 5-foot-2 of her, is the biggest star in town, with punters adding $200,000 and more to the box office daily since previews began a week ago, bringing the total advance, as of late Friday afternoon UK time, to in excess of $9 million for a 12-week summer run.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tBroadway might get a taste of Zegler\u2019s \u201chighflying, adored\u201d\u00a0Evita, as one of the show\u2019s songs puts it, in 2027, but more on that farther down the column.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tMichael Harrison, who produces\u00a0Evita\u00a0for the Lloyd Webber Harrison Musicals partnership along with\u00a0the director\u2019s Jamie Lloyd Company, declines to discuss the production\u2019s box office figures, though he agrees that they\u2019re \u201chealthy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tHe asserts that the show\u2019s \u201cgone through the roof with the public,\u201d driven by \u201cpure word-of-mouth that\u2019s nothing to do with normal advertising.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tBeaming, he amplifies: \u201dIt\u2019s her! It\u2019s Rachel. People are talking about her. They\u2019re saying her singing is phenomenal. They\u2019re loving what Jamie\u2019s done with the show.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tTo be fair, it\u2019s also down to Diego Andres Rodriguez\u2019s breathtaking Che, James Olivas\u2019 energetic portrait of Juan Per\u00f3n and the super cast and creative team. But yeah, audiences are going wild for Zegler. It\u2019s quite something to fully command, as she does, the stage of the historic London Palladium.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"c-lazy-image__img lrv-u-background-color-grey-lightest lrv-u-width-100p lrv-u-display-block lrv-u-height-auto\" src=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/wp-content\/themes\/pmc-deadline-2019\/assets\/public\/lazyload-fallback.jpg\" data-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/IMG_1680.jpeg\" alt=\"\" data-lazy- data-lazy- height=\"602\" width=\"1024\"\/><\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\tRachel Zegler as Eva Per\u00f3n in \u2018Evita,\u2019 flanked by Diego Andres Rodriguez (left) as Che and James Olivas as Juan Per\u00f3n <\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tBaz Bamigboye\/Deadline<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tHarrison notes that audiences at previews, which began June 14, combine those who\u2019d seen\u00a0Evita\u00a0before and newcomers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tUndoubtedly, the word-of-mouth Harrison refers to has been driven by how Lloyd has chosen to stage the Act 2 opener\u00a0\u201cDon\u2019t Cry for Me Argentina,\u201c with Zegler performing the popular number live from the Palladium\u2019s balcony, free\u00a0to lucky passersby down below in Argyll Street, which then is broadcast live to the paying audience seated inside.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tThe 9 o\u2019clock moment has, since news spread, become a destination point. Zegler now sings to 800, sometimes up\u00a0to a thousand, members of the public who roar with approval. Security has been increased to keep the throng attuned to the performance.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\t\u201cAt the first preview, the video shown inside the Palladium didn\u2019t show the faces of all the people on the street listening. It does now, and it conveys how Eva\u2019s addressing her people from the balcony of the Casa Rosada,\u201d Harrison explains.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tNow, apparently, there are gasps when the 2,280 seated in the Palladium catch sight of the masses gathered outside.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"c-lazy-image__img lrv-u-background-color-grey-lightest lrv-u-width-100p lrv-u-display-block lrv-u-height-auto\" src=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/wp-content\/themes\/pmc-deadline-2019\/assets\/public\/lazyload-fallback.jpg\" data-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/IMG_1688.jpeg\" alt=\"\" data-lazy- data-lazy- height=\"1024\" width=\"913\"\/><\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\tMichael Harrison and Jamie Lloyd (seated ) confer at Palladium <\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tBaz Bamigboye\/Deadline<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tHarrison disagrees with those who say it\u2019s unfair to those who have paid good money for tickets while scores get to witness the brilliant\u00a0coup de th\u00e9\u00e2tre\u00a0in the public square for naught.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tThe loudest complainers, Harrison suggests, have yet to see the show. \u201cAudiences inside are elated when they watch Rachel on the big screen,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tTo a degree, yes. Those experiencing\u00a0Evita\u00a0for the first time will know no different. Some of us boomers saw Elaine Paige (recently anointed\u00a0Dame Elaine), who originated the role in 1978, from the upper, upper circle known as the \u201ccheap seats\u201d at the Prince Edward Theatre and marveled at her interpretation of the sung address from the Casa Rosada balcony. It was staged by\u00a0legendary director Hal Prince to be performed inside an auditorium. The effect was electrifying, with sparks embedded into to each and every one of us \u2014 sealed in memory forever.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tLive theatre is about connection between artist and audience. A thespian will utter a phrase or perform a song or a chorus line will dazzle. Or a piece of music, in this case by Lloyd Webber. Once in a while a strange alchemy occurs when words spoken or sung, or actions taken, music played, reaches across the footlights and zaps and zings those who watch in awe.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"c-lazy-image__img lrv-u-background-color-grey-lightest lrv-u-width-100p lrv-u-display-block lrv-u-height-auto\" src=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/wp-content\/themes\/pmc-deadline-2019\/assets\/public\/lazyload-fallback.jpg\" data-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/IMG_1657.jpeg\" alt=\"\" data-lazy- data-lazy- height=\"768\" width=\"1024\"\/><\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\tThe London Palladium balcony (Baz Bamigboye\/Deadline)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tI felt robbed of that emotion when Zegler appeared on the screen. I felt a zap, but\u00a0I missed the emotional zing of her\u00a0\u201cDon\u2019t Cry for Me Argentina\u201d\u00a0while also noting and understanding Lloyd\u2019s intentions as a radical interpreter of the art of the musical.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tListen, Zegler gives plenty more zing\u00a0with a\u00a0Z\u00a0elsewhere in\u00a0Evita,\u00a0and as Jamie Lloyd, who was seated in front of me, exclaimed, \u201dRachel sings like an angel, doesn\u2019t she?\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tIt\u2019s true, she does. And I look forward to hearing her again at official opening night on July 1.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tThe show that I\u2019ll see in a few days will be different from the first preview I caught. Every night since, Lloyd and choreographer Fabian Aloise\u00a0have introduced new changes and will continue to do so up until next weekend.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\t\u201cThat\u2019s what previews are for,\u201d as Trevor Nunn (Cats, Les Mis\u00e9rables, Sunset Blvd.) always chimes when he\u2019s putting on a show.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tThere\u2019s a lot riding on this\u00a0Evita\u00a0that\u2019s costing north of $6 million for a 12-week limited run.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tCan Jamie Lloyd pull off another reexamination of an Andrew Lloyd Webber show with the same Olivier- and Tony Award-winning pizazz he did with\u00a0Sunset Blvd.? Opening night will reveal whether the fixes and tightening will elevate this\u00a0Evita, a version of which was first directed by Lloyd and the same creative team in 2019 at the Regent\u2019s Park Open Air Theatre. Aside\u00a0from a central piece of Soutra Gilmour\u2019s set, this latest iteration is different in a 1,001 ways.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tAnd if Zegler manages to excel beyond her fab first preview performance, then, well, let the superlatives fly.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tThey already are from producer Harrison, as you would expect.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tHe hails Zegler as a \u201dproper leading lady\u201d who is \u201cbrilliant on stage, and off.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tWhat Harrison meant by \u201cand off\u201d is that apparently Zegler\u2019s been \u201cdelightful\u201d with cast, crew, backstage and front-of-house staff.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"c-lazy-image__img lrv-u-background-color-grey-lightest lrv-u-width-100p lrv-u-display-block lrv-u-height-auto\" src=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/wp-content\/themes\/pmc-deadline-2019\/assets\/public\/lazyload-fallback.jpg\" data-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/IMG_1753.jpeg\" alt=\"\" data-lazy- data-lazy- height=\"683\" width=\"1024\"\/><\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\tRachel Zegler (center) rehearses a scene from \u2018Evita\u2019 <\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tMarc Brenner<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tI often scoff\u00a0when I hear that kinda guff, except that I saw it for myself at a relaxed, low-key, post-first-preview drinks party. Zegler entered the room and immediately headed over to castmates, hugging them with such an infectious burst of warmth that even a far-removed onlooker was moved.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tWhat\u2019s next?\u00a0Evita\u00a0can\u2019t extend at the Palladium because the venue\u2019s booked solid. People on the show bitch-slapped me with their eyes when I asked about a transfer to Broadway.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tIt\u2019s way too early, they wail. Next year\u2019s out, they cry, because Rice wants to concentrate on the forthcoming Broadway run of\u00a0Chess, his musical with ABBA\u2019s Benny Andersson and Bjorn Ulvaeus, starring Aaron Tveit, Lea Michele and Nicholas Christopher.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tAnd Lloyd Webber will be busy helping to usher\u00a0The Jellicle Ball, the Perelman Performing Arts Center\u2019s\u00a0radical adaptation of\u00a0Cats,\u00a0to bigger audiences in New York. Then Jamie Lloyd has other productions both here in London and in NYC to direct.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tThere\u2019s intense talk of Zegler playing the Julie Andrews part in\u00a0The Sound of Music\u00a0at Lincoln Center. But, hold on to the\u00a0\u201cDo-re-mi\u201d\u00a0of it all, that\u2019s not in any shape or form confirmed.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tSo don\u2019t cry for\u00a0Evita\u00a0coming to Broadway in 2026. However, prospects are brighter, positively glowing in fact, for 2027.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tHarrison, when I saw him today, reluctantly hints that there\u2019s merit in my Broadway theory. \u201cBut let\u2019s get to opening night,\u201d he sighs. \u201cWe\u2019re still in previews working on the show day and night and yesterday we had a matinee, so let us get on with it. Then we\u2019ll consider the possibilities of Broadway. And you\u2019ve got to consider aligning the availabilities,\u201d he remarks reasonably.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tJust realized that there\u2019s been no mention \u2014 until now! \u2014\u00a0of Disney\u2019s\u00a0Snow White\u00a0movie, the experience of which shook Zegler and the studio. More so those who paid to see it in theaters.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tWho cares about that film, anyway? It should never, ever have been greenlighted in the first place. Only Zegler with that voice of hers rises above\u00a0la merde. Only to then endure opprobrium being unfairly dumped on her from wimps who should\u2019ve known \u2014 and who should\u2019ve behaved \u2014 better toward her when the Disney dud was released.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tWhat Zegler went through on\u00a0Snow White\u00a0has only served to embolden her.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tShe\u2019s the real deal in this astute study of objectification at the Palladium.
