The San Diego Symphony Orchestra will launch its summer 2025 season with a trio of concerts over the weekend, starting Friday evening with an opening night concert featuring classical music.<\/p>\n

Conductor and the symphony\u2019s Music Director Rafael Payare will lead the orchestra Friday evening with trumpeter Paul Merkelo as they wend their way into the fifth summer season at the Rady Shell. The evening opens with Ginastera\u2019s Four Dances from \u201cEstancia,\u201d followed by a trumpet concerto written by lauded trumpeter Wynton Marsalis. Dukas\u2019 \u201cThe Sorcerer\u2019s Apprentice\u201d will follow, bringing the magic made famous by Disney\u2019s \u201cFantasia,\u201d and finally Debussy\u2019s ode to the sea \u201cLa mer\u201d will close out the night.<\/p>\n

On Saturday, the symphony returns to the Rady Shell for \u201cMusic of the Knights,\u201d led by Conductor Enrico Lopez-Ya\u00f1ez. The event will feature the works of Andrew Lloyd Webber, Paul McCartney and Elton John \u2014 all of whom were knighted by the late Queen Elizabeth II.<\/p>\n

Vocalists Chris Blem, Scott Coulter and Blaine Krauss and pianist John Boswell will bring the \u201cSir-prising\u201d night to San Diego feature works including:<\/p>\n

\u2014 Webber\u2019s \u201cMemory\u201d and \u201cDon\u2019t Cry for Me, Argentina;\u201d<\/p>\n

\u2014 John\u2019s \u201cCrocodile Rock,\u201d \u201cCan You Feel the Love Tonight,\u201d \u201cThe Circle of Life\u201d and \u201cYour Song;\u201d and<\/p>\n

\u2014 McCartney\u2019s \u201cYesterday,\u201d \u201cHey Jude\u201d and \u201cMaybe I\u2019m Amazed.\u201d<\/p>\n

The San Diego Symphony\u2019s opening weekend at the Rady Shell will conclude Sunday with \u201cDolly Parton\u2019s Threads: My Songs in Symphony.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Tennessee Mountain Home performance will also be conducted by Lopez-Ya\u00f1ez, and the symphony orchestra will be joined by nine Americana musicians, including Dean Berner on banjo and mandolin, Derek Drye on both acoustic and lap steel guitar and Katelyn Drye, Hollie Hammel and Julie Williams providing vocals.<\/p>\n

While Parton will not be in San Diego in person, the concert will feature her songs \u201cin an innovative multimedia symphonic experience featuring Dolly on screen, leading audiences in a visual-musical journey of her songs, her life and her stories,\u201d a statement from the Shell reads.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe threads of my life are woven together through my songs,\u201d Parton said. \u201cThat\u2019s why this project, Threads: My Songs In Symphony, is so special to me. It\u2019s all about sharing my music and my musical journey with audiences in a new way.\u201d<\/p>\n
