{"id":194068,"date":"2025-09-02T12:17:17","date_gmt":"2025-09-02T12:17:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/194068\/"},"modified":"2025-09-02T12:17:17","modified_gmt":"2025-09-02T12:17:17","slug":"sudan-landslide-death-toll-exceeds-1000","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/194068\/","title":{"rendered":"Sudan landslide death toll exceeds 1,000"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>CAIRO (AP) \u2014 A landslide wiped out an entire village in <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/hub\/sudan\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Sudan<\/a> \u2019s western region of Darfur, killing an estimated 1,000 people in one of the deadliest natural disasters in the African country\u2019s recent history, a rebel group controlling the area said late Monday.<\/p>\n<p>The village was \u201ccompletely leveled to the ground,\u201d the Sudan Liberation Movement-Army said as it appealed to the U.N. and international aid groups for help to recover the bodies.<\/p>\n<p>The tragedy happened Sunday in the village of Tarasin in Central Darfur\u2019s Marrah Mountains after days of heavy rainfall.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cInitial information indicates the death of all village residents, estimated to be more than 1,000 people, \u201c the rebel group said in a statement. \u201dOnly one person survived,\u201d it added.<\/p>\n<p>Abdel-Wahid Nour, the group\u2019s leader, made an appeal on Tuesday for international help. \u201cThe scale and magnitude of the disaster are immense and defy description,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>The ruling Sovereign Council in Khartoum said it mourned \u201cthe death of hundreds of innocent residents\u201d in the Marrah Mountains\u2019 landslide. In a statement, it said \u201call possible capabilities\u201d have been mobilized to support the area.<\/p>\n<p>Footage shared by the Marrah Mountains news outlet showed a flattened area between mountain ranges with a group of people searching the area.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018Unprecedented tragedy\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Al-Amin Abdallah Abbas, a farmer from Ammo \u2014 a cluster of villages that includes Tarasin \u2014 said the area has seen weeks of heavy rainfall, with Tarasin among the worst hit. He said tribal and community leaders in nearby areas have moblized efforts to recover and bury the victims. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe village and its people disappeared,\u201d he said. \u201cIt\u2019s an unprecedented tragedy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mohamed Abdel-Rahman al-Nair, a spokesman for the Sudan Liberation Movement-Army, told The Associated Press that the village where the landslide took place is remote and accessible only by foot or donkeys.<\/p>\n<p>Tarasin is located in the central Marrah Mountains, a volcanic area with a height of more than 3,000 meters (9,840 feet) at its summit. A world heritage site, the mountain chain is known for its lower temperature and higher rainfall than surrounding areas, according to UNICEF. It\u2019s located more than 900 kilometers (560 miles) west of the capital city, Khartoum.<\/p>\n<p>Sunday\u2019s landslide was one of the deadliest natural disasters in Sudan\u2019s recent history. Hundreds of people die every year in seasonal rains that run from July to October. Last year\u2019s heavy rainfall caused <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/sudan-dam-collapse-flooding-red-sea-state-58e5b7f2911f63d5ae1421b0da832991\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the collapse of a dam in the eastern Red Sea Province<\/a>, killing at least 30 people, according to the U.N.<\/p>\n<p>The tragedy came as <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/sudan-war-military-rsf-darfur-el-fasher-a1fa65cfd28c716a625bd4687c84eec6\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a devastating civil war has engulfed Sudan<\/a> after tensions between the country\u2019s military and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces exploded into open fighting in April 2023 in the capital, Khartoum, and elsewhere in the country.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018Deprived of adequate assistance\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Most of the conflict-stricken Darfur region has become mostly inaccessible for the U.N. and aid groups, given crippling restrictions and fighting between Sudan\u2019s military and the RSF.<\/p>\n<p>Aid group Doctors Without Borders has warned that multiple communities in Darfur, including the Marrah Mountains, have been cut off after more than two years of war and isolation, describing these areas as \u201ca black hole\u201d in Sudan\u2019s humanitarian response.<\/p>\n<p>It said in a July report that people in these communities have been \u201cdeprived of adequate assistance and neglected by aid actors for over two years.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Sudan Liberation Movement-Army, centered in the Marrah Mountains area, is one of multiple rebel groups active in the <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/sudan-kordofan-darfur-humanitarian-crisis-f4f5b146cdcaef9303a7caf02947ec07\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Darfur and Kordofan regions<\/a>. It hasn\u2019t taken sides in the war.<\/p>\n<p>The Marrah Mountains are a rugged volcanic chain extending for 160 kilometers (100 miles) southwest of el-Fasher, an epicenter of fighting between the military and the RSF. The area has turned into a hub for displaced families <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/sudan-military-rsf-darfur-el-fasher-d5f8bb5589f1c77b95c107bd72d15449\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">fleeing fighting in and around el-Fasher<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Alleged war crimes<\/p>\n<p>The conflict in Sudan has <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/sudan-war-rsf-army-famine-children-killings-213e8d787c40ddcb5a62679c0377ede2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">killed more than 40,000 people<\/a>, forced more than 14 million to flee their homes and left <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/video\/driven-to-starvation-sudanese-people-eat-weeds-and-plants-to-survive-as-war-rages-92eadcbfec5e41bea6c320b182194bf0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">some families eating grass<\/a> in a desperate attempt to survive as famine swept parts of the country.<\/p>\n<p>It has been marked by gross atrocities including ethnically motivated killing and rape, according to the United Nations and rights groups. The International Criminal Court said it was investigating <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/sudan-darfur-icc-war-crimes-humanity-khan-e54744adc5b0a06eb6a44fe94d72683d\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">alleged war crimes and crimes against humanity<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The conflict created the world\u2019s largest humanitarian crisis, with more than 30 million of the country\u2019s 50 million population needing assistance.
