A young driver has been charged over a crash in Newcastle, New South Wales, that left two international students dead on the weekend.<\/p>\n
At about 11:15pm on Saturday emergency services were called to Maitland Road at Mayfield East after a car left the road, struck a power pole and burst into flames.<\/p>\n
The 24-year-old driver and his back-seat passenger, 19, were assisted from the wreckage by passers-by.<\/p>\n
Both were take to John Hunter Hospital with minor injuries.<\/p>\n
The remaining two passengers, aged 20 and 21, were freed by emergency service crews and taken to hospital with critical burns.<\/p>\n
They died a short time later.<\/p>\n
Following inquiries by the Crash Investigation Unit police charged the driver today.<\/p>\n
He was charged with eight offences, including two counts of dangerous driving occasioning death, dangerous driving occasioning grievous bodily harm and negligent driving occasioning death.<\/p>\n
The driver was refused bail and is expected to face court on Wednesday.<\/p>\n
The ABC understands all four men were from Bangladesh and were studying at the University of Newcastle.<\/p>\n
Senior Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic) Belinda Tynan has described it as a “tragic loss”.<\/p>\n
“Our university community is deeply saddened by the tragic loss of two of our students over the weekend,” she said.<\/p>\n
“Our deepest sympathies are with their families and friends.”<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
