{"id":194166,"date":"2025-09-02T13:06:15","date_gmt":"2025-09-02T13:06:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/194166\/"},"modified":"2025-09-02T13:06:15","modified_gmt":"2025-09-02T13:06:15","slug":"pojeon-house-wraps-around-vegetable-garden-in-south-korea","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/194166\/","title":{"rendered":"Pojeon House wraps around vegetable garden in South Korea"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Local studios <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/sukchulmok\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Sukchulmok<\/a> and BRBB Architects have created a curving <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/brick\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">brick<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/concrete\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">concrete<\/a> form to frame a central vegetable garden at this home near Seoul, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/south-korea\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">South Korea<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Named Pojeon House, meaning &#8220;a house that embraces the field&#8221;, the 128-square-metre residence was designed for an elderly couple who wanted privacy without sacrificing a connection to their garden, which they had cultivated for over a decade.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2242485 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/sukchulmok-brbb-architects-a-house-that-embraces-its-vegetable-garden_dezeen_2364_col_26-852x639.jpg\" alt=\"View towards Pojeon House near Seoul\" width=\"2364\" height=\"1773\"  \/>Sukchulmok and BRBB Architects have created a curving home near Seoul<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/sukchulmok.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Sukchulmok<\/a> and BRBB Architects achieved this by creating two interlocking, curved volumes in concrete and brick, presenting a blank &#8220;fortress wall&#8221; to the nearby road but overlooking the central garden through sliding glass doors.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The core concept of Pojeon House lies in the gesture of two volumes merging together to embrace the field, ultimately becoming one unified mass,&#8221; Sukchulmok&#8217;s lead architect Hyunhee Park told Dezeen.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2242470 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/sukchulmok-brbb-architects-a-house-that-embraces-its-vegetable-garden_dezeen_2364_col_11-852x639.jpg\" alt=\"Curving brick home by Sukchulmok and BRBB Architects\" width=\"2364\" height=\"1773\"  \/>Pojeon House wraps around an existing vegetable garden<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I aimed to amplify this gesture by allowing different textures to repeat with equal rhythm, guiding them to visually cohere as a singular form,&#8221; added Park.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Positioned toward the road, its massing gives the appearance of a fortress wall, subtly concealing the interior,&#8221; he added.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2242471 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/sukchulmok-brbb-architects-a-house-that-embraces-its-vegetable-garden_dezeen_2364_col_12-852x1136.jp.jpeg\" alt=\"Concrete volume of the Pojeon House by Sukchulmok and BRBB Architects\" width=\"1773\" height=\"2364\"  \/>A concrete volume contains a guest bedroom<\/p>\n<p>The volume to the south of Pojeon House is finished in red bricks with contrasting white mortar. This volume contains the main home, including a curved living, dining and kitchen space that is flanked by a bedroom at one end and a bathroom, utility and entrance at the other.<\/p>\n<p>Along the entire inner wall of this volume is a row of sliding glass doors, which open onto a low-lying, built-in brick bench overlooking the central garden.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2242462 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/sukchulmok-brbb-architects-a-house-that-embraces-its-vegetable-garden_dezeen_2364_col_3-852x1136.jpg\" alt=\"Interior view of Pojeon House near Seoul\" width=\"1773\" height=\"2364\"  \/>The living, kitchen and dining spaces sit in the brick volume<\/p>\n<p>To the north of the site, a staircase leads up to a higher volume containing a guest bedroom for when the owner&#8217;s adult children visit, finished in exposed concrete and sheltered from the street by a curving section of concrete wall.<\/p>\n<p>Polycarbonate panels wrap this smaller guest space, offering privacy from the garden below while also creating a lantern-like effect at night.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/2024\/02\/14\/aoa-architects-hoji-gangneung-south-korea\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><br \/>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"191\" height=\"191\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/sq-aoa-architects-hoji-gangneung-concrete-houses-south-korea_dezeen_2364_col_1-191x191.jpg\" class=\"excludeLightbox wp-post-image\" alt=\"Hoji Gangneung concrete houses by AOA Architects\" decoding=\"async\" data-pin-nopin=\"true\"  \/><\/p>\n<p> Concrete ring connects cluster of South Korean homes by AOA Architects\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;For the second-floor exterior, polycarbonate was chosen to emphasise the sense of two large volumes intersecting and to align with the overall tone and manner,&#8221; explained Park.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The translucent polycarbonate complements the tone of the concrete, accentuating the upper volume while, at night, allowing exterior lighting to softly illuminate the garden &#8211; almost like a streetlamp,&#8221; he added.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2242461 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/sukchulmok-brbb-architects-a-house-that-embraces-its-vegetable-garden_dezeen_2364_col_2-852x1136.jpg\" alt=\"Kitchen interior of curved home by Sukchulmok and BRBB Architects\" width=\"1773\" height=\"2364\"  \/>A rich timber palette defines Pojeon House&#8217;s interior<\/p>\n<p>A warm palette of timber defines the interiors, lining both the ceiling that slopes up towards the garden view, and the partitions with built-in storage that divide different areas.<\/p>\n<p>This is contrasted by areas of exposed concrete in the living and entrance areas, and by the small green tiles that envelop the entire bathroom and the kitchen&#8217;s floor and splashback.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2242481 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/sukchulmok-brbb-architects-a-house-that-embraces-its-vegetable-garden_dezeen_2364_col_22-852x711.jpg\" alt=\"Green-tiled interior at Pojeon House by Sukchulmok and BRBB Architects\" width=\"2364\" height=\"1974\"  \/>Green tiles are used throughout the kitchen and bathroom spaces<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;While the overall interior reads in brown tones, each wood retains its own natural hue and texture, creating a rich and layered atmosphere,&#8221;
