I only do things that speak to me, that feel right, and make sense when you hear the music. When I came up with the imaging for it, it was so clear to me what it meant. So the reaction is fascinating to me. You just watch it unravel and go, \u2018Wow.&#8217;\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tOf the record, Carpenter continued, \u201cthere\u2019s a lot of nuance to this and I\u2019m not naive to that.\u201d Honing in on the album\u2019s central themes, she described the project to be about \u201closs and heartbreak and celebration and trying to navigate my life as a young woman \u2014 it\u2019s not so much like I\u2019m above it all, but I\u2019m not beneath it, either.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tOttenberg brings up the idea that the backlash Carpenter received was due to her appearing \u201csubmissive\u201d on the cover art.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cSubmission is both dominant and submissive,\u201d she responds. \u201cIt really depends on what your intentions are and what you want, and what you crave, and what you need. The image, the way I see it, is a metaphor, but I\u2019m sure that other people are like, \u2018Dang, she\u2019s a sub?&#8217;\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tElsewhere in the piece, Carpenter discusses recording the album in London, New York and Los Angeles, highlighting the set\u2019s main collaborators \u2014 Jack Antonoff, John Ryan and Amy Allen. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cIt was just the four of us and a lot of fireplaces,\u201d she said. \u201cThere was a constant smell of smoke in the air and I was in a really delirious state, almost. But a lot of it ended up being exactly how I felt, which was sort of hugged and thrown around in my head. But the production is some of my favorite ever, and it\u2019s obviously all because of Jack and John. They\u2019re both masters of what they do.
