CHICAGO (WLS) — At least 58 people have been shot, eight fatally, in shootings across Chicago over the Labor Day weekend, police said.<\/p>\n
The weekend gun violence comes as the Trump administration prepares to potentially deploy the National Guard to the Chicago area.<\/a><\/p>\n ABC7 Chicago is now streaming 24\/7. Click here to watch<\/a><\/p>\n Tuesday morning, President Donald Trump posted on social media, “I will solve the crime problem fast, just like I did in DC. Chicago will be safe again, and soon.”<\/p>\n The Bronzeville neighborhood saw two mass shootings within 48 hours.<\/p>\n Five people, including a 17-year-old who suffered critical injuries, were shot<\/a> near 36th and Cottage Grove by Ellis Park early Monday.<\/p>\n “At the end of the day, to have one person that was critically injured and four folks in the hospital, whatever the situation was, it was senseless,” said 4th Ward Ald. Lamont Robinson.<\/p>\n The other mass shooting happened on Saturday night near 35th and State, where seven people were hurt<\/a> in a drive-by attack.<\/p>\n Ald. Pat Howell told ABC7, “I have long asked for additional police manpower to deal with large illegal gatherings and pop-up parties that routinely occur throughout the Bronzeville neighborhood.”<\/p>\n Summer 2025 violence:<\/strong> Tracking shootings across Chicago | Live updates<\/a><\/p>\n The violence comes after Mayor Brandon Johnson signed an executive order<\/a> to fight the Trump administration’s immigration enforcement plans and potential deployment of National Guard troops to the city.<\/p>\n “Us as people, we can come together and fix it on our own. We don’t need no one to come here and, you know, wreck check our community,” said Alexis Hawthorne, owner of the Top Tier University Football Youth Program.<\/p>\n Hawthorne says her program in Bronzeville is working to provide a safe place for children.<\/p>\n “We’re gonna push through, because it disservices the kids,” Hawthorne said.<\/p>\n Others think the troops could help.<\/p>\n “I got kids, and I want to, you know, I want to see the community better. I run every day out here. I exercise out here. So for the streets to be safer, I think it’s really good,” said Bronzeville resident Alex Kali.<\/p>\n But Hawthorne says her football program does just that.<\/p>\n “It’s definitely a safe haven,” Hawthorne said. “We gonna do whatever it takes to make sure that these kids have somewhere to come.”<\/p>\n Parents with kids who are interested in joining the Top Tier University Football Youth Program can reach out to toptier.corps@gmail.com.<\/p>\n Holiday weekend violence roundup<\/p>\n A woman was shot and killed in a South Shore apartment on Friday night.<\/p>\n The shooting happened at about 11:56 p.m. in the 7700-block of S. Essex Avenue, according to police.<\/p>\n Police found two women with gunshot wounds inside the apartment.<\/p>\n A 25-year-old woman was shot twice in the abdomen, and once in the leg. Police said she was taken to University of Chicago Hospital, where she died.<\/p>\n READ MORE | <\/strong>Woman killed, other hurt in South Shore apartment shooting, police say<\/a><\/p>\n A shooting investigation was underway in East Garfield Park on Saturday, police said.<\/p>\n The shooting happened at about 11:01 a.m. in the 500-block of North Sawyer, police said.<\/p>\n Police said two men, 29 and 32, were standing outside when a dark SUV pulled up.<\/p>\n A suspect got out of the SUV and started shooting in their direction, police said<\/p>\n The 29-year-old was shot multiple time. He was taken Mt. Elizabeth Street.<\/p>\n The man was shot in the head and died at the scene, police said. Nobody is in custody.<\/p>\n He was identified as Cedric D. Hicks, 33, by the Cook County’s Medical Examiner.<\/p>\n Chicago police are also investigating two separate drive-by shootings.<\/p>\n In Bronzeville, at least seven people were shot<\/a> at about 11:10 p.m. on Saturday in the 3500-block of S. State Street, police said.<\/p>\n All victims were taken to area hospitals and are expected to be OK.<\/p>\n In Humboldt Park, at least four people were shot <\/a>at about 1:11 a.m. on Sunday in the 2700-block of W. Haddon Avenue, police said.<\/p>\n A man was killed in a triple shooting on Sunday, police said.<\/p>\n The shooting happened at about 1:39 a.m. in the 1900-block of W. 17th Street.<\/p>\n Police said three men, aged 41, 43 and 46, were outside when a male suspect approached and started shooting.<\/p>\n All three were taken to an area hospital.<\/p>\n The 46-year-old man, shot multiple times, died at the hospital.<\/p>\n The other two were shot in their legs and are expected to be OK.<\/p>\n A teenage boy was shot on the city’s West Side on Sunday afternoon, police said.<\/p>\n Police said the shooting happened in the Lawndale neighborhood’s 1500-block of South Christiana Avenue just after 5 p.m.<\/p>\n A 14-year-old boy was near the sidewalk when someone approached him, took out a gun and fired shots, police said.<\/p>\n The victim, shot in the arm and hand, went to St. Anthony Hospital in good condition.<\/p>\n There is no one in custody, and area detectives are investigating.<\/p>\n Police did not immediately provide further information about the shooting.<\/p>\n READ MORE | <\/strong>Teen among 5 hurt in South Side shooting, Chicago police say<\/a><\/p>\n A teenager was critically hurt in a mass shooting during a large gathering on Monday, police said.<\/p>\n The shooting happened at about 1:05 a.m. in the 3600-block of S. Police were questioning one person of interest.<\/p>\n A man was shot near Montrose Harbor on Chicago’s North Side on Monday evening, police said.<\/p>\n
