\u201cThis museum is not just about what\u2019s on the walls, it\u2019s about the souls of the people who come through here,\u201d said the museum’s president and CEO.<\/p>\n
DALLAS \u2014 Margie Reese combed through an Ebony Magazine from the 1960s.<\/p>\n
\u201cMuch of this material is very old,\u201d said Reese, African American Museum<\/a> of Dallas Chief Programs Officer.<\/p>\n There\u2019s a particular care when handling time. Reese took WFAA on a journey of what was, what is, and what can be.\u00a0<\/p>\n \u201cThey couldn’t bring the spaces and the places and the tools that they used, but they could bring it in their memory,\u201d Reese said.<\/p>\n They are memories such as an old picture of Booker T. Washington High School, originally called The Negro School. It\u2019s what the museum wants to protect.<\/p>\n \u201cI was thinking about how far we’ve come,\u201d said Lisa Ross, African American Museum of Dallas President and CEO. \u201cA certain faction of our country wants to erase our memory, we can’t be erased.\u201d<\/p>\n They announced a $3M grant from the Texas Historical Commission<\/a> and support from Google<\/a> to digitize its collections.\u00a0<\/p>\n \u201cIt’s hot in Texas,\u201d Reese said. \u201cOver time, the material gets fragile.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n The funding will go towards digitizing and preserving collections. The materials have been collected over the past 50 years.<\/p>\n \u201cSo, digitizing it to us accomplishes two things. It makes it available to a global audience, but it also keeps it safe in perpetuity,” Reese said.<\/p>\n \u201cThis museum is not just about what\u2019s on the walls, it\u2019s about the souls of the people who come through here,\u201d Ross said.<\/p>\n The museum\u2019s archives manager, Faith Golden, showed folklore art from artist, Mr. Imagination. The exhibition will soon be on display.<\/p>\n \u201cWe can also teach our children.
