{"id":195251,"date":"2025-09-02T22:47:08","date_gmt":"2025-09-02T22:47:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/195251\/"},"modified":"2025-09-02T22:47:08","modified_gmt":"2025-09-02T22:47:08","slug":"philadelphia-weather-still-nice-as-meteorological-fall-begins","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/195251\/","title":{"rendered":"Philadelphia weather still nice as meteorological fall begins"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">With blue skies accommodating the picturesque cumulus clouds, comfortable daytime temperatures, and very sleep-able nights, the weather around here has taken an <a class=\"relative z-1 text-blue-mid hover:shadow-lightmode\" data-link-type=\"article-body\" href=\"https:\/\/www.inquirer.com\/weather\/jersey-shore-labor-day-weather-ripcurrents-20250828.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.inquirer.com\/weather\/jersey-shore-labor-day-weather-ripcurrents-20250828.html\">uncharacteristically benign turn<\/a> in the last two weeks.<\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">Philly hasn\u2019t had a cloudy day since Aug. 22, and unless you\u2019re missing those <a class=\"relative z-1 text-blue-mid hover:shadow-lightmode\" data-link-type=\"article-body\" href=\"https:\/\/www.inquirer.com\/weather\/philadelphia-storm-warning-flooding-timing-20250902.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.inquirer.com\/weather\/philadelphia-storm-warning-flooding-timing-20250902.html\">flood alerts<\/a> and steaming heat, this has been hard not to like. <\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">How long can this tranquillity continue? Evidently, for at least several more days, but not necessarily forever.<\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">In case you\u2019re wondering whatever happened to the 2025 hurricane season \u2014 wait.<\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">\u201cThe season is going to come alive very, very shortly,\u201d said Alex DaSilva, chief hurricane specialist with AccuWeather Inc.<\/p>\n<p>The \u2018meteorological fall\u2019 has begun <\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">The \u201cmeteorological fall\u201d \u2014 the Sept. 1-Nov. 30 period \u2014 is underway. <\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">But in the Philly region and elsewhere in the mid-Atlantic and Northeast, the atmosphere was about two weeks ahead of the meteorologists.<\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">In Philly, temperatures since Aug. 18 have averaged about 4 degrees below normal, and August officially was the coolest in the city since 2014, according to the National Weather Service. It was the fifth-coolest in Atlantic City in more than 80 years of record keeping.<\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \"><a class=\"relative z-1 text-blue-mid hover:shadow-lightmode\" data-link-type=\"article-body\" href=\"https:\/\/www.inquirer.com\/weather\/philadelphia-weather-dew-points-mugginess-data-20250716.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.inquirer.com\/weather\/philadelphia-weather-dew-points-mugginess-data-20250716.html\">Despite a hot June, a blistering July<\/a>, and an August heat wave, the summer finished with an average temperature of 77.4 degrees. That made it the not-so-hot 17th-warmest summer in Philly records dating to the 1870s. <\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">Not coincidentally, Philly\u2019s cool spell coincided with extreme heat in the West that saw triple-digit readings on Aug. 22 and 23 in Portland, Oregon. <\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">Often, when it\u2019s chilly in the East, the upper-air patterns are such that Westerners are baking. <\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">\u201cIt\u2019s very hard to keep it warm everywhere, and cool everywhere,\u201d said DaSilva.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s also been quite dry. Will that change?<\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">About the only blemish on the recent run of weather has been the spreading dryness, which has been evident throughout the Northeast, according to the Northeast Regional Climate Center. <\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">The 1.73 inches of rain measured at Philadelphia International Airport in August was 2.56 inches shy of normal.<\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">It was Washington, D.C.\u2019s driest August on record, with just 0.2 inches of rain. Boston experienced its fourth-driest, and Wilmington, the 12th driest. Ports of South Jersey now are in the interagency U.S. Drought Monitor\u2019s \u201cabnormally dry\u201d zones. <\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">But this time of year, wild cards are often in play in the form of \u201ctropical remnants,\u201d said Alex Staarmann, meteorologist with the weather service. <\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">The region experienced disruptive effects from a total of six tropical storms or their <a class=\"relative z-1 text-blue-mid hover:shadow-lightmode\" data-link-type=\"article-body\" href=\"https:\/\/www.inquirer.com\/weather\/hurricanes-landfalls-emnants-ida-isaias-deaths-philadelphia-record-20210925.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.inquirer.com\/weather\/hurricanes-landfalls-emnants-ida-isaias-deaths-philadelphia-record-20210925.html\">remnants in 2020 and 2021,<\/a> including <a class=\"relative z-1 text-blue-mid hover:shadow-lightmode\" data-link-type=\"article-body\" href=\"https:\/\/www.inquirer.com\/news\/ida-deaths-philadelphia-montgomery-bucks-rescue-anniversary-20220901.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.inquirer.com\/news\/ida-deaths-philadelphia-montgomery-bucks-rescue-anniversary-20220901.html\">those of devastating Ida,<\/a> but no significant tropical rainmakers since. Hurricane Erin last month generated tidal flooding at the Shore in tandem with the new moon, but no substantial rain. <\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">Since Erin spun into obscurity, the tropics have been quiet. <\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">But DaSilva says the rainfall deficits eventually could end in a hurry, for better or worse. <\/p>\n<p>\u2018Watch the Gulf,\u2019 as the hurricane season nears its peak<\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">The atmosphere has also been dry out in the Atlantic hurricane zone, said Philip Klotzbach, hurricane researcher at Colorado State University. In effect, the dryness has put a cap on development. \u201cWe\u2019ve generally had a more stable atmosphere than normal,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">A tropical storm is expected to form later this week from a disturbance that had formed off the African coast, but it appears that like Erin, it will curve away from the U.S. East Coast. <\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">To date, six named storms, those with winds of at least 39 mph, have formed in the Atlantic Basin, which includes the Caribbean Sea and the Gulf of Mexico, with Erin the lone hurricane. On average, two hurricanes have formed by now. <\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">But the hurricane season is approaching its climatological peak, which is Sept. 10.<\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">\u201cWe\u2019re going to have to watch the Gulf,\u201d said DaSilva. The waters there are dangerously warm. <\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">\u201cIt\u2019s like a tinder box,\u201d he said. The warm waters have not been disturbed, and thus not cooled, by passing storms.<\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">\u201cThe waters are basically untouched. If we get anything in the Gulf later this month, even into October, it\u2019s probably going to be a major hurricane.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">A storm approaching the Philly region from the Gulf could be a prodigious rainmaker, he said.<\/p>\n<p>Showers are possible this week, but don\u2019t expect much rain<\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">The forecasts call for the run of sunny days to continue.
