These shifts are all tied to concerns about inflation, tariffs and the job market.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1090901\">For instance, real consumer spending was up by 0.3% in July, according to the most recent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.investopedia.com\/pce-inflation-july-11800323\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Personal Consumption Expenditures report;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \"> Personal Consumption Expenditures report<\/a> available, led by automobile sales. However, that came at the expense of other purchases, especially discretionary spending at places like restaurants and hotels.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1090901\">\u201cThe composition of spending still carries some mild signs of tough choices for households,\u201d Wells Fargo economists Tim Quinlan and Shannon Grein said in a report. Specifically, they noted that one &#8220;early manifestation of tariff impact on consumer spending is the trend decline in discretionary services categories.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1090901\">A closely-followed consumer sentiment survey for August also shifted lower on fears about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.investopedia.com\/consumer-sentiment-fades-and-inflation-worries-return-11791884\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:inflation;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">inflation<\/a> following the implementation of a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.investopedia.com\/here-is-every-tariff-in-effect-after-trump-deadline-11782883\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:slate of new tariffs;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">slate of new tariffs<\/a> in early August.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1090901\">\u201cPerceptions of many aspects of the economy slipped,&#8221; said Michigan Consumer Surveys Director Joanne Hsu. &#8220;Buying conditions for durable goods subsided to their lowest reading in a year, and current personal finances declined 7%, both due to heightened concerns about high prices.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1090901\">A separate August survey from The Conference Board also showed that consumer confidence slipped due to fears about inflation and a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.investopedia.com\/the-job-market-is-hitting-the-skids-data-shows-11795405\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:weakening job market;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">weakening job market<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1090901\">\u201cConsumers\u2019 plans to buy big-ticket items were slightly down overall, but with a lot of variation from one item to the next: the strongest increases in buying intentions were for washers and dryers, with the largest declines in TVs and tablets,\u201d The Conference Board report said.\u00a0 \u201cDiscretionary spending plans\u2014including on dining out and outdoor and indoor entertainment\u2014were down.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1090901\">The board\u2019s Consumer Confidence Index showed that consumers planned to spend on mostly non-discretionary categories like financial services as well as car and home maintenance.
