{"id":195416,"date":"2025-09-03T00:16:10","date_gmt":"2025-09-03T00:16:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/195416\/"},"modified":"2025-09-03T00:16:10","modified_gmt":"2025-09-03T00:16:10","slug":"ex-nyc-mayor-bill-de-blasio-endorses-zohran-mamdani-for-city-hall","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/195416\/","title":{"rendered":"Ex-NYC Mayor Bill de Blasio endorses Zohran Mamdani for City Hall"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>He dropped that endorsement<a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2014\/09\/25\/groundhog-dropped-by-de-blasio-died-of-internal-injuries\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">\u00a0like it was a groundhog<\/a><strong>.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Former Mayor Bill de Blasio endorsed socialist Democratic nominee Zohran Mamdani on Tuesday in the race for City Hall\u00a0\u2014 contending\u00a0his fellow\u00a0progressive\u2019s \u201cbold, sweeping\u201d agenda will save the Big Apple.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe don\u2019t just need Zohran Mamdani to be our mayor because he has the right ideas, or because they can be achieved,\u201d de Blasio said in a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nydailynews.com\/2025\/09\/02\/bill-de-blasio-why-i-am-endorsing-zohran-mamdani\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">New York Daily News op-ed\u00a0<\/a>as he threw his support behind the front-runner.<\/p>\n<p>Former Mayor Bill de Blasio on Tuesday endorsed socialist Democratic nominee Zohran Mamdani in the race for City Hall. Paul Martinka<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe need him because in his heart and in his bones he cannot accept a city that prices out the people who built it and keep it running.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But the perpetually bumbling de Blasio\u2019s endorsement drew scoffs from many insiders, including one longtime political operative with ties to the lefty Working Families Party.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot sure how much a progressive hack\u2019s endorsement matters,\u201d the operative said, snarkily adding, \u201cI thought it was time for new energy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>De Blasio represented that \u201cnew energy\u201d in 2013, when his vision of turning New York City into a progressive utopia helped propel the then-public advocate\u2019s dark horse mayoral campaign to victory.<\/p>\n<p>But after quickly breaking promises and embarking on a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2019\/09\/20\/bill-de-blasio-pulls-the-plug-on-his-sputtering-presidential-bid\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">quixotic presidential bid<\/a>, de Blasio \u2014 who had a less-than-cordial relationship with the NYPD \u2014 squandered New Yorkers\u2019 goodwill so much he saw his\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2021\/06\/18\/bill-de-blasios-approval-rating-in-the-basement-post-poll-finds\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">approval dip to an abysmal 26%<\/a>\u00a0during 2021, his last year in office.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf that\u2019s a barometer of what the future holds, he didn\u2019t do Mamdani any favors,\u201d said Hank Sheinkopf, another political operative who also oozed sarcasm when asked about the endorsement.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDe Blasio was nearly indicted on campaign violations, the police were in uproar, and the city in chaos, but other than that, it was great.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The two-term mayor, apparently feeling belated vindication in Mamdani\u2019s rise, used his op-ed to paint a rosy picture of his own time in City Hall.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe need him because in his heart and in his bones he cannot accept a city that prices out the people who built it and keep it running,\u201d ex-Mayor Bill de Blasio said of Zohran Mamdani. Stephen Yang for the New York Post<\/p>\n<p>He recalled that critics had ripped his policies \u2014 including affordable housing, paid sick days and pre-K for all \u2014 as \u201crecklessly idealistic.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOften, these critiques were lodged by politicians and special interest groups who had a vested interest in maintaining the broken status quo. In short, labeling my agenda as infeasible masked their true problem with it: an unwillingness to cede power and opportunity to working people,\u201d he wrote.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn 2025, the same overheated condemnations yield the same result as in 2013: not only does the public want what Mamdani is proposing, it actually all can be done.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\tStart your day with all you need to know\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p class=\"inline-module__cta\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\tMorning Report delivers the latest news, videos, photos and more.\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\tThanks for signing up!\n\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>Even de Blasio\u2019s critics acknowledged his success with universal pre-K, although the rest of his record received arguably more mixed reviews.<\/p>\n<p>Still, de Blasio insisted Mamdani\u2019s promise for affordability \u2014 including rent freezes, free child care and free city buses \u2014 was the reason the little-known Queens assemblyman clinched the June Democratic primary.<\/p>\n<p>De Blasio endorsed Mayor Eric Adams as his successor in the 2021 mayoral election. Still others have lost faith in the city government\u2019s ability to not only talk, but deliver. They want to know one fundamental truth: can it be done?\u201d de Blasio wrote.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI can say definitely \u2014 and I know better than anyone \u2014 that the answer is yes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>De Blasio argued that President Trump\u2019s cost-cutting agenda was even more reason to elect the socialist in November.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt a time when Donald Trump is cutting SNAP benefits, gutting Medicaid, and once again leaving working people out to dry, the need for an unwavering fighter in City Hall has never been higher,\u201d he wrote.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s not enough to have a \u2018leader\u2019 unwilling to be bold in their pursuit for economic opportunity, or hiding behind this so-called question of feasibility.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Not all political insiders pooh-poohed de Blasio\u2019s endorsement.<\/p>\n<p>De Blasio could be a potent campaign attack dog for Mamdani against former Gov. Andrew Cuomo, Sharpton says. William Farrington<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDe Blasio\u2019s endorsement helps Mamdani,\u201d said Basil Smilke, a strategist who worked for former Mayor Michael Bloomberg and Hillary Clinton.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt elevates Mamdani to have a two-term mayor with progressive credentials supporting him. It helps sustain momentum.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The Rev. Al Sharpton noted that de Blasio could be a potent campaign attack dog for Mamdani against former Gov. Andrew Cuomo, the candidate\u2019s chief rival.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDe Blasio could hit the campaign trail and hurt Cuomo,\u201d Sharpton said about the two pols, who\u00a0famously butted heads when serving as mayor and governor.<\/p>\n<p>Even when de Blasio\u2019s popularity plummeted, polls showed he maintained majority support in the black community thanks to his policies of universal pre-K, poverty fighting initiatives and curbing stop-and-frisk policing.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Mamdani\u2019s support among black voters, by contrast, was weak in the primary against Cuomo.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDe Blasio was accessible. No one perceives de Blasio as a clubhouse politician,\u201d Sharpton said, noting de Blasio was elected twice.<\/p>\n<p>De Blasio endorsed Mayor Eric Adams as his successor in the 2021 mayoral election.<\/p>\n<p>He called Adams on Monday night to tell him he was endorsing Mamdani, a source with knowledge said.<\/p>\n<p>The source also said de Blasio told Adams, who is running for re-election as an independent, that he would have stuck with him if he remained on the Democratic Party line.<\/p>\n<p>Mamdani will face Adams, Cuomo, and GOP nominee Curtis Sliwa in November\u2019s election.
