{"id":195424,"date":"2025-09-03T00:20:16","date_gmt":"2025-09-03T00:20:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/195424\/"},"modified":"2025-09-03T00:20:16","modified_gmt":"2025-09-03T00:20:16","slug":"weaponisation-of-australian-flag-denounced-in-wake-of-divisive-rallies","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/195424\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8216;Weaponisation&#8217; of Australian flag denounced in wake of divisive rallies"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">On this day, 124 years ago, the Australian flag was flown for the first time.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">It flew over the dome of the Exhibition Building in Melbourne \u2014 the seat of the fledgling Australian federal government \u2014 on September 3, 1901.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">A competition to design the new national flag was run through the Australian colonies in a bid to help unite them behind a common symbol.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Now, more than 100 years later, and in the wake of anti-immigration protests at the weekend, some say the flag should never be &#8220;weaponised&#8221; to divide us.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\"><a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2025-08-28\/who-is-behind-march-for-australia-anti-immigration-rallies\/105657548\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/105657548\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">On Sunday, March for Australia rallies were held across the country<\/a> with many protesters waving flags and calling for a reduction in so-called &#8220;mass immigration&#8221;. Here are reasons why these people have made it a feature of their homes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;And when it becomes worn like an article of clothing, it&#8217;s a way of saying, &#8216;This is my flag.'&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Professor Davison said that in certain contexts \u2014 such as protests \u2014 this could come with more &#8220;sinister&#8221; implications.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"EmphasisedText_quote__TE6kn\"><p>&#8220;It can mean in situations of conflict, &#8216;It&#8217;s not yours. (ABC News: Monty Jacka)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The use of flags at the protests was also condemned by the Maritime Union of Australia (MUA), which said in a post on social media that the history of the Eureka and Red Ensign flags had been &#8220;stolen from hardworking Australians to undermine community cohesion&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;This first began during anti-vaccine and anti-lockdown protests and has proliferated since into various right-wing causes,&#8221; the union wrote.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;The MUA is a proudly internationalist and multicultural union committed to our nation&#8217;s rich history of diversity, built upon successive generations of immigration since this land was stolen from its First Nations peoples during colonisation.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Australian National Flag Day<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The Australian National Flag&#8217;s design was determined through a competition in 1901, which received more than 32,000 entries.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2024-03-17\/australia-city-flags-sydney-redesign\/103585696\" data-component=\"FullBleedLink\" class=\"RelatedCard_link__rsgR9 FullBleedLink_root__lTw_U interactive_focusContext__yRhc_ interactive_defaults__AKxUU FullBleedLink_showVisited__g3Xvz\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Should this &#8216;problematic&#8217; Australian city flag be changed?<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP RelatedCard_synopsis__cFwMW Typography_sizeMobile14__u7TGe Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Australia&#8217;s city flags are unknown and unloved.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Five nearly identical designs were awarded equal first and the winning design was unveiled and flown above the Exhibition Building in Melbourne.
