{"id":195532,"date":"2025-09-03T01:17:17","date_gmt":"2025-09-03T01:17:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/195532\/"},"modified":"2025-09-03T01:17:17","modified_gmt":"2025-09-03T01:17:17","slug":"guatemalan-children-at-san-antonio-shelter-avoid-sudden-deportation-after-federal-judge-halts-their-removal","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/195532\/","title":{"rendered":"Guatemalan children at San Antonio shelter avoid sudden deportation after federal judge halts their removal"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\"><strong>SAN ANTONIO<\/strong> \u2013 A federal judge has temporarily blocked the Trump administration\u2019s attempt to deport more than 70 Guatemalan children during a late-night operation over the holiday weekend.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">The unaccompanied children, aged 13 to 17, were housed at Compass Connections, a facility contracted by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services in San Antonio, when authorities attempted to suddenly remove them Saturday night.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">\u201cThe facilities holding these children were given approximately two hours to have all of the Guatemalan children ready to be discharged so that immigration could disappear them to Guatemala in the dead of night, on the middle of a holiday weekend,\u201d said Jonathan Ryan, an immigration attorney representing some of the children.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">The children were taken to Harlingen, where planes waited on the tarmac for hours as attorneys successfully sought a temporary restraining order from a federal judge.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">The Trump administration claimed the deportation attempt was in response to Guatemala\u2019s request to reunite the children with parents or guardians seeking their return. However, Ryan disputed this assertion.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">\u201cThese are children who are set for immigration court hearings before a U.S. immigration judge,\u201d Ryan said. \u201cThese are children who were pursuing humanitarian visas, asylum.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Ryan said the attempted deportation took an emotional toll on the children. <\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">\u201cYou saw children crying. Children staring off into the void, contemplating the harm that they were expecting to meet when they were returned to those countries,\u201d Ryan said. \u201cWhat I saw were children who looked broken.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">The temporary restraining order allows the children to remain in the United States for at least two weeks while their cases move through the legal system.
