{"id":195799,"date":"2025-09-03T03:37:14","date_gmt":"2025-09-03T03:37:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/195799\/"},"modified":"2025-09-03T03:37:14","modified_gmt":"2025-09-03T03:37:14","slug":"disney-to-pay-10-million-for-collecting-childrens-data-on-youtube","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/195799\/","title":{"rendered":"Disney to Pay $10 Million for Collecting Children&#8217;s Data on YouTube"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t<a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/t\/disney\/\" id=\"auto-tag_disney\" data-tag=\"disney\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Disney<\/a> has agreed to pay a $10 million civil penalty for allowing children\u2019s data to be collected on videos posted to <a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/t\/youtube\/\" id=\"auto-tag_youtube\" data-tag=\"youtube\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">YouTube<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tThe <a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/t\/federal-trade-commission\/\" id=\"auto-tag_federal-trade-commission\" data-tag=\"federal-trade-commission\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Federal Trade Commission<\/a> alleged that Disney failed to designate videos on the platform as \u201cMade for Kids.\u201d That designation is meant to comply with federal law that protects kids from having their data collected and used for targeted advertising.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tThe FTC said in a statement that Disney will change its practices to comply with the Children\u2019s Online Privacy Protection Act, which requires parental consent for data collection for users under 13 years old.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cOur order penalizes Disney\u2019s abuse of parents\u2019 trust, and, through a mandated video-review program, makes room for the future of protecting kids online \u2014 age assurance technology,\u201d said Andrew Ferguson, the FTC chairman, in a statement.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tIn a statement, Disney said it is committed to adhering to child privacy laws.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cSupporting the well-being and safety of kids and families is at the heart of what we do,\u201d the company said. \u201cThis settlement does not involve Disney owned and operated digital platforms but rather is limited to the distribution of some of our content on YouTube\u2019s platform. Disney has a long tradition of embracing the highest standards of compliance with children\u2019s privacy laws, and we remain committed to investing in the tools needed to continue being a leader in this space.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tIn 2019, YouTube <a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2019\/digital\/news\/youtube-ftc-fine-170-million-coppa-kids-data-1203323004\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">agreed to pay<\/a> $170 million for collecting data on children. As part of that settlement, YouTube began requiring content providers to designate whether videos are \u201cMade for Kids\u201d or not.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tAccording to the FTC <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ftc.gov\/system\/files\/ftc_gov\/pdf\/DisneyComplaint.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">complaint<\/a>, YouTube notified Disney in June 2020 that some 300 videos from movies including \u201cThe Incredibles,\u201d \u201cCoco,\u201d \u201cToy Story,\u201d \u201cTangled\u201d and \u201cFrozen\u201d had not been designated as \u201cMade for Kids.\u201d The complaint states that YouTube redesignated the videos, but had to keep doing that with additional videos over the next couple of years.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tYouTube allows users to designate videos either individually or at the channel level. According to the complaint, Disney\u2019s policy was to designate at the channel level, but then posted many child-oriented videos to its \u201cNot Made for Kids\u201d channels, resulting in them being designated as \u201cNot Made for Kids\u201d by default.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tThose videos include cartoons, sing-alongs and story times with actors reading children\u2019s books.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tDisney obtains a share of YouTube\u2019s ad revenue on its videos, and also sells advertising directly. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cDisney\u2019s failure to accurately designate child-directed videos as MFK results in YouTube collecting personal information and placing targeted advertisements on child-directed videos on Disney\u2019s behalf,\u201d the complaint states.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tOther features are also disabled on \u201cMade for Kids\u201d videos, including comments and autoplay. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tUnder the <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ftc.gov\/system\/files\/ftc_gov\/pdf\/DisneyStipulationandProposedOrder.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">settlement<\/a>, Disney must maintain an Audience Designation Program to properly classify all of the videos it posts to YouTube.
