SAN ANTONIO \u2014 San Antonio police say several people have been detained for questioning after they were seen by witnesses “exiting an 18-wheeler and running into an open field” on the southwest side Tuesday evening.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Officers with the San Antonio Police Department responded to the area of Plumnear and Quintana around 6 p.m. Homeland Security personnel eventually arrived to the scene to assist, but it’s unclear as of now if law enforcement are dealing with a possible smuggling situation.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Between five and seven people had been found as of 7:30 p.m., including those believed to have been driving the tractor-trailer.\u00a0<\/p>\n
“As they were running, witnesses stated they began to enter different vehicles in an attempt to get away,” said Emily Garvin, a spokesperson for SAPD. “Right now we have multiple people detained, multiple vehicles detained, and we are working closely with Homeland Security.”<\/p>\n
Various SAPD units could be seen in the area and a police helicopter was searching overhead.\u00a0<\/p>\n
She added that information was preliminary and could change as the investigation continues, but there had been no reported injuries or fatalities in connection with the incident.\u00a0<\/p>\n
