{"id":196288,"date":"2025-09-03T07:53:19","date_gmt":"2025-09-03T07:53:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/196288\/"},"modified":"2025-09-03T07:53:19","modified_gmt":"2025-09-03T07:53:19","slug":"2-more-detainees-die-in-nyc-custody-after-rikers-island-inmate-found-dead","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/196288\/","title":{"rendered":"2 more detainees die in NYC custody after Rikers Island inmate found dead"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Two more detainees died while in the custody of the city over the last week \u2014 adding to an alarming trend that also saw a Rikers Island inmate found dead, cops and sources said. <\/p>\n<p>Musa Cetin, 29 \u2013 a pedicab driver in custody for operating without a license, according to online court records \u2013 was discovered unconscious and unresponsive inside a cell at the Midtown South NYPD headquarters on West 35th Street near Ninth Avenue at 8:33 p.m. Friday, cops said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>He appeared to have hanged himself with a jacket, law enforcement sources said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Pedicab driver Musa Cetin, 29, was found unconscious and unresponsive inside the NYPD\u2019s Midtown South Precinct Friday evening, cops said. Kyle Mazza\/NurPhoto\/Shutterstock<\/p>\n<p>Just 14 minutes earlier, at 8:19 p.m., precinct cops had checked on Cetin as part of their \u201cstandard checks\u201d but found nothing amiss, the sources said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Police officers and EMS workers \u201cperformed life-saving measures,\u201d but Cetin was rushed to Bellevue Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries two days later, authorities said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p>His death is under investigation by the NYPD\u2019s Force Investigation Division.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, around 10:15 p.m. Friday, Christopher Nieves, 46, was found unconscious and unresponsive inside a holding cell at Kings County Criminal Court on Schermerhorn Street near State Street in downtown Brooklyn, cops said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Just 14 minutes earlier, precinct cops had checked on Cetin, and he was in \u201cgood condition,\u201d sources said. Kyle Mazza\/NurPhoto\/Shutterstock<\/p>\n<p>He was pronounced dead at the scene by responding EMS workers.<\/p>\n<p>Nieves appeared to have suffered a heart attack, according to law enforcement sources.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>His official cause and manner of death will be determined by the city medical examiner\u2019s office, and the department\u2019s Force Investigation Division is probing the case.<\/p>\n<p>Nieves was found lifeless inside a holding cell at Kings County Criminal Court Friday night, cops said. Michael Nagle<\/p>\n<p>Nieves was in custody for stealing food from a Whole Foods on Bedford Avenue in Williamsburg a day earlier, police said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>News of the two deaths comes after 44-year-old Jimmy Avila <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/09\/01\/us-news\/murder-suspect-who-shot-3-in-backyard-dispute-dies-at-rikers\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">died in custody <\/a>inside Rikers Island\u2019s West Facility around 4:30 p.m. Saturday, officials said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Avila was accused of shooting three people, <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/08\/28\/us-news\/deadly-bronx-apartment-shooting-sparked-by-ongoing-dispute-with-neighbors-sources\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">killing his building\u2019s superintendent<\/a>, Ryan Hines, 37 \u2013 in a rage-fueled Wednesday rampage over a shared backyard in the Bronx, according to sources and neighbors.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Nieves was in custody for stealing food from Whole Foods, cops said. Michael Nagle<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur hearts are heavy with the loss of an individual in our care,\u201d DOC Commissioner Lynelle Maginley-Liddie said in a statement. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe mourn his passing and extend our sympathies to his loved ones.
