{"id":196406,"date":"2025-09-03T08:57:18","date_gmt":"2025-09-03T08:57:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/196406\/"},"modified":"2025-09-03T08:57:18","modified_gmt":"2025-09-03T08:57:18","slug":"fallen-phx-officer-zane-coolidge-to-be-honored-with-sign","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/196406\/","title":{"rendered":"Fallen PHX Officer Zane Coolidge to be honored with sign"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>PHOENIX \u2014 One year after Phoenix Police Officer Zane Coolidge was shot and killed in the line of duty, a historic marker will be unveiled in his honor, officials announced Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>The ceremony will take place at 8 p.m. Wednesday at the site of the shooting, on the south side of <a href=\"https:\/\/maps.app.goo.gl\/UWd1vm91MhyrNMox7\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">16th Street near McDowell Road<\/a> in Phoenix.<\/p>\n<p>McDowell Road will close between 16th and 17th streets for the ceremony at 7 p.m. It is expected to reopen by 9 p.m., <a href=\"https:\/\/www.phoenix.gov\/content\/dam\/phoenix\/policesite\/mediaadvisories\/2025\/MEDIA%20OPPORTUNITY%20Zane%20Coolidge%20Marker.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">according to Phoenix police<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Coolidge\u2019s sign will be the 43rd hung around Phoenix to honor fallen police officers. A list of the markers and the locations can be found <a href=\"https:\/\/www.phoenix.gov\/content\/dam\/phoenix\/policesite\/documents\/fallen_officer_marker_locations.pdf?sh=3dab62be_2673_4029_9492_6457cb8712c8.c1ssqsvSpmoVQZt4A7oDuhbQDiV2iiQPwBH7tTIpfso\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">on the Phoenix Police Department\u2019s website<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Details on 2024 shooting that killed Phoenix Officer Zane Coolidge<\/p>\n<p>On Sept. 3, 2024, Coolidge and another Phoenix police officer, Matthew Haney, responded to the area of 16th Street and McDowell Road due to a report of a car theft.<\/p>\n<p>The officers approached a suspect, <a href=\"https:\/\/ktar.com\/arizona-news\/suspect-first-degree-murder-phoenix-officer\/5604712\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Saul Bal<\/a>, who ran away and jumped over a fence.<\/p>\n<p>Bal allegedly shot at the officers when they chased after him.<\/p>\n<p>Both Coolidge and Haney were shot and taken to Banner University Medical Center.<\/p>\n<p>Coolidge died <a href=\"https:\/\/ktar.com\/arizona-news\/phoenix-police-officer-dies-days-shooting-community-mourns-loss\/5601223\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">three days later<\/a>. Haney was discharged from the hospital one day after being shot.<\/p>\n<p>Bal was taken into custody by officers at the scene.
