PITTSBURGH\u00a0\u2014\u00a0The Dodgers<\/a> have had an illness running through their clubhouse lately.<\/p>\n

And on Wednesday, it forced an alteration in their pitching plans.<\/p>\n

While Shohei Ohtani<\/a> was in the Dodgers\u2019 lineup as designated hitter for their game against the Pittsburgh Pirates, the two-way star was scratched from his scheduled pitching start at PNC Park after feeling \u201cunder the weather\u201d the past few days, according to manager Dave Roberts<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen you\u2019re sick and potentially dehydrated, the tax of pitching in a game wasn\u2019t worth it,\u201d Roberts said.<\/p>\n

Instead, Emmet Sheehan will take the mound for Wednesday\u2019s game, while Ohtani\u2019s next pitching appearance will be pushed to \u201csometime this weekend\u201d against the Baltimore Orioles.<\/p>\n

\u201cJust to give him a few more days to recover,\u201d Roberts said.<\/p>\n

Ohtani\u2019s sickness certainly didn\u2019t seem to hamper him at the plate Tuesday, when he had two doubles and a career-high 120 mph exit velocity on a solo home run \u2013\u2013 his 46th of the season and 100th as a Dodger.<\/p>\n

However, Roberts said Ohtani\u2019s pregame catch play on Tuesday was cut short, and that the risk of overexerting the reigning National League MVP by having him make a full-length start Wednesday wasn\u2019t worth it.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe toll of taking four or five at-bats versus pitching five innings, there\u2019s no comparison,\u201d Roberts said.<\/p>\n

Ohtani\u2019s symptoms have included chest and sinus \u201cstuff\u201d as well as \u201ca deep cough,\u201d Roberts added.<\/p>\n

Several other Dodgers players have dealt with similar issues recently. Max Muncy was so sick last week, the team sent him home to rest and delayed the start of his minor-league rehab assignment to this week.<\/p>\n
