{"id":197894,"date":"2025-09-03T21:58:11","date_gmt":"2025-09-03T21:58:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/197894\/"},"modified":"2025-09-03T21:58:11","modified_gmt":"2025-09-03T21:58:11","slug":"fourth-person-charged-over-camp-sovereignty-attack-neo-nazi-leader-held-in-custody","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/197894\/","title":{"rendered":"Fourth person charged over Camp Sovereignty attack, Neo-Nazi leader held in custody"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">A fourth person has been charged over an alleged attack on a First Nations camp in Melbourne over the weekend.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">A<a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2025-09-01\/camp-sovereignty-clash-melbourne-rally\/105719018\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/105719018\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> group of black-clad men were involved in a melee with occupants at Camp Sovereignty, in the Kings Domain<\/a>, after the men marched from an anti-immigration rally in the CBD on Sunday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Neo-Nazi leader Thomas Sewell is being held in custody following his arrest earlier this week over the incident.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Victoria Police said a 29-year-old Rye man was arrested on Wednesday in Sunnyside Road, Mount Eliza.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">He was interviewed by detectives and has been charged with violent disorder, affray, unlawful assault and discharging a missile.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">He will face the Melbourne Magistrate&#8217;s Court today.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Mr Sewell, 32, and two other men, aged 20 and 23, were arrested and charged on Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Police continue to investigate the Camp Sovereignty attack and have urged anyone with information or footage of the incident to contact CrimeStoppers on 1800 333 000.<\/p>\n<p>Neo-Nazi leader held in custody<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Thomas Sewell<a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2025-09-03\/neo-nazi-thomas-sewell-remanded-custody-court\/105730714\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/105730714\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> faced court on Wednesday and was remanded in custody after<\/a> police argued he was too dangerous to be allowed to walk the streets.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">A judge will decide on Friday if Mr Sewell&#8217;s bail request will be granted. (ABC News: Justin Hewitson)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">On Wednesday, Detective Senior Constable Saer Pascoe told the Melbourne Magistrates&#8217; Court that Mr Sewell should be refused bail because he posed an unacceptable risk to the community.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;The applicant&#8217;s behaviour in recent times has been escalating in violence and concerning behaviour,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The officer said Mr Sewell&#8217;s white supremacy group had a &#8220;documented history of hate crimes&#8221; and there was a risk of &#8220;serious injury or death&#8221; to anyone who stood up to them.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Mr Sewell had complete control over a &#8220;group of followers who will attack on his instruction without hesitation&#8221;, Senior Constable Pascoe said.<\/p>\n<p>Sewell&#8217;s lawyer argues arrest was political<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\"><a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2025-09-02\/neo-nazi-leader-gatecrashes-jacinta-allan-press-conference\/105723820\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/105723820\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Mr Sewell appeared &#8220;aggressive and erratic&#8221; when he gatecrashed Premier Jacinta Allan&#8217;s press conference on Tuesday<\/a>, just hours before his arrest, the officer testified.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">He also said Sunday&#8217;s alleged attack on Camp Sovereignty was &#8220;unprovoked&#8221;, with victims kicked, punched and attacked with a pole.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">At least three people were injured, including one who needed a head wound stapled, Senior Constable Pascoe said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">However, Mr Sewell&#8217;s lawyer, Matthew Hopkins, said there would be evidence put to the court showing &#8220;at least some elements of provocation&#8221; against the black-clad men before the Camp Sovereignty melee.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;There was some conflict and we will be submitting evidence of graffiti on cars,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A bald man with a brown moustache is confronted by several men in a playground.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/1756936691_795_efb3d132719044158596b3d469f1d1fc\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Thomas Sewell confronted Victorian Premier Jacinta Allan at a press conference earlier this week. (AAP: Callum Godde)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Mr Sewell was already on bail at the time of Sunday&#8217;s incident.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">He was midway through a contested hearing on charges of intimidating a police officer when he was arrested on Tuesday outside the court.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Mr Sewell&#8217;s lawyer accused police of coming after his client for political reasons.
