COLCHESTER, Vt. (WCAX) – Extremely low water levels on Lake Champlain are raising concerns for recreational users.<\/p>\n
There\u2019s no doubt about the drought. <\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019ve never seen the water so low,\u201d said Christina Lacroix of South Burlington. <\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019ve never seen anything like it. It\u2019s pretty crazy,\u201d said Michelle Collins of Colchester. <\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s a huge topic of conversation. I feel like it\u2019s been coming up like in all my social groups when we talk about the lake. It\u2019s like the first thing that people are mentioning,\u201d said Mikala Magnant of St. Albans.<\/p>\n
Vermonters hoping to cash in on a few more summer favorites before fall have been left high and dry. <\/p>\n
\u201cIt takes a lot longer to walk your paddleboard, all the way out to the water,\u201d Lacroix said.<\/p>\n
And the low levels spell trouble for boaters, especially those with docks. \u201cMy neighbor, he\u2019s been moving it and he he\u2019s just about as far as he can go. He can\u2019t go any further because he doesn\u2019t gain any depth. So, if it drops anymore, he\u2019s going to have to pull his docks in because he can\u2019t use them,\u201d said Luke Lacroix of Williston.<\/p>\n
One unexpected perk is allowing unusual access to islands typically accessed only by water. \u201cRight before the Labor Day weekend, and I saw a bunch of people with cards, beach cards and backpacks, and they just went right out to the island from the causeway easily walking,\u201d Collins said.<\/p>\n
Wednesday\u2019s recorded lake level sits at just above 93 feet according to the National Weather Service — exactly one foot lower than the average for September 3. <\/p>\n
