{"id":198438,"date":"2025-09-04T02:46:10","date_gmt":"2025-09-04T02:46:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/198438\/"},"modified":"2025-09-04T02:46:10","modified_gmt":"2025-09-04T02:46:10","slug":"solar-panels-could-save-philly-schools-nearly-20m","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/198438\/","title":{"rendered":"Solar panels could save Philly schools nearly $20M"},"content":{"rendered":"<p data-uri=\"www.audacy.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmf4o60gp000e01yin2frrph4@published\" data-editable=\"text\" class=\"paragraph paragraph--station\">PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) \u2014\u00a0A <a href=\"https:\/\/environmentamerica.org\/pennsylvania\/resources\/solar-schools-for-pennsylvania\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">new report<\/a> released Wednesday said the Philadelphia School District would see substantial savings by putting solar panels on the roofs of school buildings.<\/p>\n<p data-uri=\"www.audacy.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmf4o64er000i357t286m91kz@published\" data-editable=\"text\" class=\"paragraph paragraph--station\">The study by the nonprofit PennEnvironment found that installing solar panels on all 300 district buildings could generate enough energy to power more than 15,000 homes and save taxpayers nearly $20 million on energy bills.<\/p>\n<p data-uri=\"www.audacy.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmf4o64g6000j357ti72nzz55@published\" data-editable=\"text\" class=\"paragraph paragraph--station\">\u201cThe main barrier to schools going solar is the upfront costs,\u201d said Flora Cardoni, PennEnvironment\u2019s deputy director.<\/p>\n<p data-uri=\"www.audacy.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmf4o64iy000k357tv7cm61ai@published\" data-editable=\"text\" class=\"paragraph paragraph--station\">Philadelphia schools superintendent Tony Watlington said it helped that the district received a $1.2 million grant under Pennsylvania\u2019s Solar for Schools program. The district announced in May that it would use the funds to install panels at Andrew Hamilton School, Murrell Dobbins Career &amp; Technical Education High School, Northeast Community Propel Academy, and W.B. Saul High School.<\/p>\n<p data-uri=\"www.audacy.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmf4o64ji000l357tbla5oo18@published\" data-editable=\"text\" class=\"paragraph paragraph--station\">\u201cIt gives us an opportunity to lower our costs, and also to do our part as a large organization to reduce our environmental footprint,\u201d Watlington said.<\/p>\n<p data-uri=\"www.audacy.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmf4o64js000m357tl6gwyd4m@published\" data-editable=\"text\" class=\"paragraph paragraph--station\">The report also found \u201cgoing solar\u201d in Pennsylvania schools could cut carbon dioxide emissions, the leading cause of global warming, by 1.4 million tons per year.
