Credit: Carlos Meriles<\/p>\n<p>Researchers at The City College of New York have shown how a quantum emitter, the nitrogen-vacancy (NV) center in diamond, interacts in unexpected ways with a specially engineered photonic structure when moved around with a scanning tip.<\/p>\n<p>The study, led by Carlos A. Meriles\u2014Martin and Michele Cohen Professor of Physics in the Division of Science\u2014and titled &#8220;Emission of Nitrogen\u2013Vacancy Centres in Diamond Shaped by Topological Photonic Waveguide Modes,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41565-025-02001-3\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">appears<\/a> in the journal Nature Nanotechnology.<\/p>\n<p>What has long been considered a drawback of the NV center\u2014its broad and messy emission spectrum\u2014turns out to enable a new type of coupling that reshapes its light in ways not seen before.
