{"id":19860,"date":"2025-06-27T19:31:11","date_gmt":"2025-06-27T19:31:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/19860\/"},"modified":"2025-06-27T19:31:11","modified_gmt":"2025-06-27T19:31:11","slug":"san-antonios-complete-streets-policy-lands-top-ranking-in-nationwide-report","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/19860\/","title":{"rendered":"San Antonio\u2019s Complete Streets policy lands top ranking in nationwide report"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\"><strong>SAN ANTONIO<\/strong> \u2013 The City of San Antonio\u2019s Complete Streets policy took the top spot in a nationwide report out this week.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">The report from Smart Growth America and the National Complete Streets Coalition evaluates policies adopted in 2023 and 2024 using the Complete Streets Policy Framework, a national model of best practices for crafting policies that can be implemented in communities of all sizes and contexts, a news release said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">\u201cThe toolkit will be something that public agencies and developers can refer to when considering how to create a safer street that handles various modes of transportation \u2013 from bus transit to pedestrians, to bike riders and drivers,&#8221; said Transportation Department director Catherine \u201cCat\u201d Hernandez.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">San Antonio <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ksat.com\/news\/local\/2024\/09\/19\/city-council-passes-update-to-complete-streets-policy-amid-new-city-budget\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">adopted its updated policy last year<\/a>, establishing a framework for street design that considers the needs of all users.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">The city, in conjunction with its Transportation Department, is developing a toolkit to support the implementation of the policy, according to the release. <\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Joey Pawlik, executive director of ActivateSA, an advocacy organization that helped drive community support for the update, echoed his support for the report.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">\u201cActivateSA and the San Antonio Complete Streets Coalition are incredibly proud of San Antonio being named as the city with the best Complete Streets policy in the nation,\u201d Pawlik said in an emailed statement to KSAT. \u201cThis is a true testament to the work of our diverse Complete Streets community coalition advocating for a Complete Streets policy that will create safer, healthier, more equitable, resilient streets in our city.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><b>What is in the report?<\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">San Antonio\u2019s policy received an overall score of 96 out of 100, seven points higher than its closest competitor, according to the release. <\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">The other two cities in the top three were Nashville, Tennessee, and Clyde, Ohio. <\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Overall, the report considered 43 nationwide policies in its ranking.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">San Antonio\u2019s adopted policy was the first since the approach was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ksat.com\/news\/local\/2023\/10\/26\/city-of-san-antonio-partners-local-coalition-advance-updates-to-complete-streets-policy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.ksat.com\/news\/local\/2023\/10\/26\/city-of-san-antonio-partners-local-coalition-advance-updates-to-complete-streets-policy\/\">first introduced<\/a> in 2011.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Complete Streets is an approach to planning, designing, building, and maintaining streets that enables safe access for everyone, including pedestrians, bicyclists, motorists, and transit riders of all ages and abilities.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">\u201cComplete Streets policies matter in every community because they\u2019re designed to meet the specific needs of that place,\u201d said Heidi Simon, director of thriving communities at Smart Growth America.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">San Antonio already showed signs of considering the policy after <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ksat.com\/news\/local\/2025\/05\/07\/new-pedestrian-and-bike-safety-commission-lands-on-sa-city-council-agenda\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.ksat.com\/news\/local\/2025\/05\/07\/new-pedestrian-and-bike-safety-commission-lands-on-sa-city-council-agenda\/\">approving the creation of a multimodal transportation commission<\/a> in May 2025.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\"><b>The report can be viewed below:<\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\"><b>Read more:<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Copyright 2025 by KSAT &#8211;
