Even police won&#8217;t work with them"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Folks in my adopted city don&#8217;t suffer fools lightly, and Trump is a fool who thinks he can flex his authoritarian muscles by sending troops onto the streets of Democratic-led cities.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"position:absolute;top:0;left:0;right:0;bottom:0;width:100%;height:100%;z-index:2\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/85920063007-clean.jpg\"\/><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"vidplayicon\" src=\"https:\/\/www.gannett-cdn.com\/appservices\/universal-web\/universal\/icons\/icon-play-alt-white.svg\" alt=\"play\" style=\"height:40px;margin:auto 18px auto 27px;width:40px\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Chicago mayor signs order to fight Trump\u2019s troop deployment<\/p>\n<p>Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson launched Protecting Chicago Initiative to fight back against President Trump&#8217;s possible federal troop deployment.<\/p>\n<p>CHICAGO \u2014 We here in this &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.poetryfoundation.org\/poetrymagazine\/poems\/12840\/chicago\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">City of the Big Shoulders<\/a>,&#8221; this diverse, beautiful, complicated Midwestern metropolis, are preparing for a likely <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/politics\/2025\/08\/28\/trump-immigration-enforcement-chicago\/85875506007\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Donald Trump-ordered invasion of federal immigration agents<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/politics\/2025\/09\/02\/trump-chicago-violent-labor-day-weekend\/85941649007\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/politics\/2025\/09\/02\/trump-chicago-violent-labor-day-weekend\/85941649007\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">possibly federal troops<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Yes, I used the word \u201cinvasion,\u201d as it seems accurate. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/nation\/2025\/09\/01\/trump-billionaires-mass-protests\/85886334007\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Nobody here wants them<\/a>, not Chicago\u2019s mayor, not the governor, not the people, not the advocacy groups that help immigrants or work to stop violence. If the feds or the soldiers come, they\u2019ll be uninvited and unwelcome, and the pointlessness of their mission will be clear as a sunny late-summer day on the shore of Lake Michigan.<\/p>\n<p>Folks in my adopted city don\u2019t suffer fools lightly, and Trump is a fool who thinks he can <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/08\/30\/opinion\/trump-visual-symbols-authoritarian.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">flex his authoritarian muscles by sending troops<\/a> onto the streets of Democratic-led cities. He is itching for chaos.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;They want to inflame something&#8217; \u2013 that&#8217;s why Trump&#8217;s targeting Chicago<\/p>\n<p>As <a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/homenews\/state-watch\/5478272-donald-trump-police-takeover-national-guard-chicago-threat\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker said recently<\/a> of the rumored Trump administration plans to do in Chicago what they\u2019ve already messily and dumbly done in Los Angeles and Washington, DC: \u201cThe intentions here are clear. Nothing to do with actually enforcing the law, nothing to do with actually keeping the peace. They want to inflame something. That is what they want.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"related-link\"><strong style=\"margin-right:3px\">Opinion: <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/opinion\/columnist\/2025\/08\/25\/chicago-trump-national-guard-crime\/85811934007\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Of course Trump is going to invade Chicago. He&#8217;s a lawless president.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Like all good aspiring dictators, Trump knows if he kicks off trouble with his masked U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement goons or draws mass protests by militarizing the streets of a major city, it\u2019ll give him an excuse to exert more federal power.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s not clever, it\u2019s just the obvious play for a man who sees our democracy as an obstacle.<\/p>\n<p>Trump keeps lying about violent crime as ICE goes after families<\/p>\n<p>For whatever they\u2019re worth in these days of Trumpian dishonesty, the facts are against the president in all regards. He can talk about ICE agents rounding up hardened criminals, but <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ice.gov\/detain\/detention-management\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">according to the most recent ICE data<\/a>, 70% of those presently in ICE or U.S. Customs and Border Protection custody <a href=\"https:\/\/www.msn.com\/en-us\/news\/us\/trump-admin-says-70-of-ice-detainees-do-not-have-criminal-convictions\/ar-AA1LvzLG?ocid=msedgdhp#:~:text=New%20numbers%20from%20the,did%20not%20have%20criminal%20convictions.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">have no felony conviction<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Trump and his administration toadies can talk about \u201cviolent crime in big cities,\u201d but <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicago.gov\/city\/en\/depts\/mayor\/press_room\/press_releases\/2025\/august\/Fact-Sheet-2025-Crime-Decline.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">crime in Chicago is down sharply<\/a>, with a 32% drop in homicides and a nearly 40% drop in shootings.<\/p>\n<p>If they come into my city, it will be for the noise and spectacle of it all, for the sole purpose of manipulating the masses with unfounded fear, not for any valiant reason or with the goal of making anyone\u2019s life better.<\/p>\n<p>Chicago cops won&#8217;t help ICE, and they won&#8217;t wear masks either<\/p>\n<p>Mayor Brandon Johnson has signed an executive order that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicago.gov\/city\/en\/depts\/mayor\/press_room\/press_releases\/2025\/august\/protecting-chicago-executive-order.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Chicago police &#8220;will not cooperate<\/a> with or enable any unlawful or unconstitutional actions undertaken by federal law enforcement.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>And you can bet the activists, faith leaders and concerned residents of Chicago will be organized and ready to peacefully place wrenches in the gears of Trump\u2019s intimidation machine.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:.5em;border:2px solid #4f4bb6;margin:0 auto\"><b>Opinion alerts:<\/b> Get columns from your favorite columnists + expert analysis on top issues, delivered straight to your device through the USA TODAY app. Don&#8217;t have the app? <a href=\"https:\/\/static.usatoday.com\/mobile-apps\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Download it for free from your app store<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wbez.org\/immigration\/2025\/08\/29\/chicago-crime-ice-immigration-national-guard-donald-trump-juliana-stratton-jb-pritzker\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">WBEZ Chicago recently quoted<\/a> the Rev. Tyrone McGowan of Progressive Community Church on the city\u2019s South Side: \u201cWe are rising, rising not because of soldiers and military occupation, but because of neighbors and organizers, health care professionals, educators, pastors and parents, young people and elders who decide to choose peace.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Chicago&#8217;s history of protest awaits Trump&#8217;s federal invasion<\/p>\n<p>Chicago has a long history of protest. In the 19th century, German and Irish immigrants were being blamed for crime \u2013 sound familiar? \u2013 and the city\u2019s mayor targeted German saloon owners, leading <a href=\"https:\/\/chicagoreader.com\/news\/lager-beer-riot-chicago-police\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">German immigrants to rise up<\/a> and clash with police on the Clark Street Bridge over the Chicago River.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/ALLPOLITICS\/1996\/conventions\/chicago\/facts\/chicago68\/index.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">1968 Democratic National Convention in Chicago led to days of riots<\/a> involving police, soldiers and throngs of Vietnam War protesters.<\/p>\n<p>In 2006, hundreds of thousands of people <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2006\/US\/05\/02\/immigrant.day\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">gathered in Chicago to protest anti-immigration policies<\/a>, and earlier this year, tens of thousands gathered downtown in Daley Plaza to rail against the Trump administration <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/chicago\/news\/no-kings-protest-chicago-saturday-what-to-know\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">as part of the nationwide No Kings protest<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"related-link\"><strong style=\"margin-right:3px\">Opinion: <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/opinion\/columnist\/2025\/08\/29\/covid-vaccine-cdc-walkout-kennedy-firing\/85867556007\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">RFK Jr. is an anti-vaccine kook destroying the CDC. Impeach him.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Simply put, Chicagoans know how to protest. The city has a massive network of well-organized activist groups and a baked-in intolerance for getting pushed around. People here look out for their neighbors, and they know a con artist like Trump when they see one.<\/p>\n<p>The myth of Chicago as a violent hellscape is red meat for Trump&#8217;s base<\/p>\n<p>The president and his Republican Party have used Chicago as a culture-war cudgel for years on end, painting this city \u2013 my city \u2013 as some violent hellhole, statistics and objective reality be damned. We have problems, as do all cities and towns. Ours can seem worse, a multiplicative factor that comes with life in a place of 2.7 million people.<\/p>\n<p>But <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsweek.com\/most-dangerous-cities-trump-washington-dc-2112006\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">among cities with a population of more than 100,000<\/a>, Chicago isn\u2019t even near the top 10 in violent crime per capita.<\/p>\n<p>So Trump should take his fearmongering and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/politics\/2025\/09\/02\/trump-chicago-violent-labor-day-weekend\/85941649007\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/politics\/2025\/09\/02\/trump-chicago-violent-labor-day-weekend\/85941649007\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">false narratives and excuses to sic U.S. troops<\/a> on U.S. citizens and use them somewhere really violent, like Little Rock, Arkansas, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsweek.com\/most-dangerous-cities-trump-washington-dc-2112006\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">which is No. 4 on the most violent cities list<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;City of the Big Shoulders&#8217; will stand strong against Trump<\/p>\n<p>So we\u2019ll wait for Trump\u2019s invasion. But let it be known loud and clear that this isn\u2019t a city you mess with. This is the place that saw regular pizza and said, \u201cHey, what if we make that about 2 inches deeper and put more cheese on it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This is a place of hard work.
