Retirement System Board of Administration <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=KlwTI8ZSchk\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:expressed;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">expressed<\/a> divided views when asked whether Bitcoin should be included in the $506 billion fund&#8217;s portfolio.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1090901\">CalPERS holds 410,596 Strategy shares valued at $165.9 million according to its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sec.gov\/Archives\/edgar\/data\/919079\/000091907925000010\/xslForm13F_X02\/informationtable.xml\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Q2 13F filing;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Q2 13F filing<\/a>, giving the pension system substantial indirect <a href=\"https:\/\/decrypt.co\/resources\/what-is-bitcoin-four-minute-instant-guide-explainer\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Bitcoin;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Bitcoin<\/a> exposure through the company.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1090901\">The forum opened with tensions as incumbent David Miller attacked challenger Dominick Bei during opening statements, saying &#8220;cryptocurrency should not have a seat on our board and never should,&#8221; while referencing Bei&#8217;s Bitcoin education nonprofit, Proof of Workforce.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1090901\">CalPERS &#8220;owns shares in the largest bitcoin holding company in the world, MicroStrategy,&#8221; Bei rebuked, questioning why the fund maintains substantial indirect exposure while candidates oppose direct investment.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1090901\">Michael Saylor\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/decrypt.co\/resources\/what-is-microstrategy-mstr-the-bitcoin-treasury-company\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Strategy;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Strategy<\/a> holds over 636,505 BTC worth over $70 billion, making it a popular vehicle for institutional crypto exposure without direct purchases.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1090901\"><a href=\"https:\/\/wp.decrypt.co\/328193\/uk-pension-firm-sees-growing-interest-in-bitcoin-exposure\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:UK Pension Firm Sees Growing Interest in Bitcoin Exposure;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">UK Pension Firm Sees Growing Interest in Bitcoin Exposure<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1090901\">Miller attempted to reconcile this apparent contradiction, saying &#8220;investing in a business that&#8217;s working with Bitcoin transactions is a very different game than direct investment in buying Bitcoin.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1090901\">Kadan Stadelmann, Chief Technology Officer at Komodo Platform, told Decrypt that &#8220;Bitcoin is certainly not too volatile for pensions, especially in light of inflation.&#8221; The market has &#8220;clearly chosen Bitcoin as a store of value,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1090901\">He noted CalPERS is &#8220;basically too scared to invest directly into Bitcoin&#8221; and has &#8220;a duty to hold Bitcoin in self-custody so the public is actually holding bitcoins, and not promises from middlemen.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1090901\">Meanwhile, challenger Steve Mermell declared &#8220;Hell no!&#8221; when asked about crypto&#8217;s place in CalPERS.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1090901\">He compared crypto to past financial disasters such as Orange County bankruptcy and Enron, calling it &#8220;opaque&#8221; he said, but added he wouldn&#8217;t &#8220;close the door entirely on it.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1090901\">The split extended to how candidates viewed blockchain technology versus direct crypto investment.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1090901\">Incumbent Jose Luis Pacheco rejected the possibility of Bitcoin as an investment while calling blockchain &#8220;an emerging technology with promise,&#8221;
