You read that headline right.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">The vastly repped and acclaimed 904 area code is synonymous with Jacksonville and the surrounding areas.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">But before Northeast Florida was coined as the nine zero four, it \u2013 and all of the Sunshine State \u2013 shared the notable Miami area code.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 kNAFkD cuqaEv article-text\">The 305 dominated Florida as the only area code in 1947 when the National Numbering Plan was created. It was one of the <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.org\/details\/sim_bell-telephone-magazine_winter-1947-1948_26_4\/page\/188\/mode\/2up\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/archive.org\/details\/sim_bell-telephone-magazine_winter-1947-1948_26_4\/page\/188\/mode\/2up\">first of 86 area codes<\/a> for the United States and Canada.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 kNAFkD cuqaEv article-text\"><b>RELATED: <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.news4jax.com\/news\/local\/2024\/09\/04\/celebrate-904-day-with-jacksonvilles-rich-history\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.news4jax.com\/news\/local\/2024\/09\/04\/celebrate-904-day-with-jacksonvilles-rich-history\/\"><b>Celebrate 904 Day with Jacksonville\u2019s rich history<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Numbering plan areas and their area codes in the United States and Canada (Bell Telephone Magazine Winter 1947-1948: Volume 26, Issue 4.)<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Rapidly expanding populations across the state, communication advancements, and the addition of faxes, beepers, and eventually cell phones called for more area codes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">The 904 wasn\u2019t introduced until 1965, and it still wasn\u2019t exclusive to Northeast Florida. All of North Florida, from the Ocala area to Panama, was the 904.<\/p>\n<p>Graphic of Florida&#8217;s area codes in 1965 (WJXT)<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">The 813, now known as Tampa, represented Southwest Florida, and the 305 was for counties on Florida\u2019s east coast. <\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">The rising demand for phone numbers led Panama City, Tallahassee, and Pensacola to break away from the 904 and adopt the 850 area code in 1997. <\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 kNAFkD cuqaEv article-text\">That left Jacksonville, its surrounding areas, and Daytona Beach carrying the 904 title until 2001, <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20010629071540\/http:\/\/www.areacode-info.com\/headline\/2001\/fl010201.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20010629071540\/http:\/\/www.areacode-info.com\/headline\/2001\/fl010201.htm\">when the 386 area code was introduced<\/a>. From then on, the 904 became the distinct Northeast Florida identity we know today, making the area code\u2019s exclusive connection to the Jacksonville area only 24 years old.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Much like Miami, Orlando and Tampa, the beloved 904 area code eventually hit the same wall: a shortage of phone numbers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 kNAFkD cuqaEv article-text\">The Florida Public Service Commission <a href=\"https:\/\/www.news4jax.com\/news\/local\/2024\/02\/25\/new-324-area-code-coming-monday-to-northeast-florida-904-is-here-to-stay\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">introduced the 324 area code<\/a> to Northeast Florida in February 2024.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Florida now has 28 area codes, with several counties sharing multiple area codes to support growing population demand.<\/p>\n<p>Map of Florida&#8217;s area codes (National American Numbering Plan Administrator)<\/p>\n<p>Copyright 2025 by WJXT News4JAX &#8211; All rights reserved.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"JACKSONVILLE, Fla. \u2013 Yep.
