(Chicago Tribune historical photo)<\/p>\n<p><strong>1966: <\/strong>Demonstrators marched from Chicago to Cicero to protest the treatment of Black college student\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2016\/09\/02\/black-chicago-teens-death-fueled-cicero-march-during-1966-protests\/&amp;sa=D&amp;source=calendar&amp;ust=1757300206169237&amp;usg=AOvVaw1bK6vN1cUyMY5-CYRZp7z4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Jerome Huey<\/a>. Huey went to Cicero on May 25, 1966, to interview at a freight loading company. On his way back to the bus stop that evening, according to Tribune archives, four white teens attacked him with a baseball bat as he walked alone near 25th Street and Laramie Avenue. Huey died in a hospital four days later.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"mSbgq6Y0nt\">\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2025\/08\/28\/chicago-when-national-guard-was-activated\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The National Guard has been activated to Chicago 18 times from 1877-2021. Here\u2019s a breakdown.<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The marchers \u2014 about 250 in number \u2014 were showered with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/chicagotribune.newspapers.com\/article\/chicago-tribune-march-ends-in-rock-fight\/179899186\/&amp;sa=D&amp;source=calendar&amp;ust=1757300206169237&amp;usg=AOvVaw2x1GPX6LvkvfUQmig9lonX\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">racial epithets, bricks, bottles and firecrackers<\/a> by an angry crowd of spectators.\u00a0Police officers and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/chicagotribune.newspapers.com\/article\/chicago-tribune-guard-to-patrol-cicero\/179898991\/&amp;sa=D&amp;source=calendar&amp;ust=1757300206169237&amp;usg=AOvVaw28EZFggmhJOIaDUifUe2Z6\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2,000 members of the National Guard<\/a>\u00a0with rifles and bayonets controlled the hostile crowd. The marchers proceeded south to 25th Street and then west to Laramie Avenue, where they held a prayer vigil on the spot Huey was attacked. His parents, Isaac and Ruth Huey, both now deceased, joined them.<\/p>\n<p>In 1967, three of the four teens charged with murder were\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/chicagotribune.newspapers.com\/article\/chicago-tribune-three-guilty-in-slaying\/179899316\/&amp;sa=D&amp;source=calendar&amp;ust=1757300206169237&amp;usg=AOvVaw0vkAYDJLkmaJ-9vB1F2ZBD\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">convicted of voluntary manslaughter<\/a>\u00a0and sentenced to nine to 20 years in prison. Each served less than five years, public records showed.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"lazyautosizes lazyload\" alt=\"Chicago Ald. (Bob Fila\/Chicago Tribune)<\/p>\n<p><strong>1986:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2023\/05\/04\/vintage-chicago-tribune-king-charles-returns-in-1986-without-princess-diana-and-sons-william-and-harry\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Prince Charles (now King Charles III)<\/a> started in Chicago a 12-day tour of the United States \u2014 without his wife <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2022\/08\/31\/it-was-princess-diana-it-was-great-fun-qa-with-a-former-northwestern-president-on-her-1996-chicago-visit\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Princess Diana<\/a> and sons. He visited Marshall Field\u2019s State Street store, Whitney Young Magnet High School and participated in a polo match at the Oak Brook Polo Club.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"7op5sQOtD8\">\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2023\/05\/04\/vintage-chicago-tribune-when-british-royals-including-king-charles-visited-the-windy-city\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Vintage Chicago Tribune: When British royals \u2014 including King Charles \u2014 visited the Windy City<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Early in the match, a collision at the north end of the field \u2014 which was roughly nine football fields in size \u2014 left England\u2019s star player Andrew Seavill pinned beneath his horse and the prince laid out beside him.<\/p>\n<p>An ambulance and a paramedic rushed to the scene, and the player\u2019s horse was hoisted off his leg. After a five-minute pause, both the player and the prince appeared to be OK.
