Morrissey<\/a> has revealed he wants to sell off all of his business interests in The Smiths<\/a> as he\u2019s \u201cburnt out by any and all connections\u201d to his former bandmates.<\/p>\n

Yesterday (September 3), the ex-Smiths frontman took to his website<\/a> and official social media accounts to share that he has \u201cno choice but to offer for sale all of his business interests\u201d in The Smiths to any potential investors or parties.<\/p>\n

He explained in a statement: \u201cI am burnt out by any and all connections to [Johnny] Marr<\/a>, [Andy] Rourke<\/a>, [Mike] Joyce. I have had enough of malicious associations. With my entire life I have paid my rightful dues to these songs and these images. I would now like to live disassociated from those who wish me nothing but ill-will and destruction, and this is the only resolution.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe songs are me \u2013 they are no one else \u2013 but they bring with them business communications that go to excessive lengths to create as much dread and spite year after year,\u201d he continued. \u201cI must now protect myself, especially my health.\u201d<\/p>\n

What exactly is Morrissey offering up for sale? Interested parties and investors can purchase his \u201cfull and exclusive rights\u201d to The Smiths name, all Smiths artwork, all Smith merchandising rights, Smiths songs both lyrically and musically, all synchronisation rights, all Smiths recordings and all contractual rights for the Smiths publishing. In August last year, Morrissey appeared somewhat sentimental as he reflected on the legacy of the band<\/a>:\u201cI am incredibly grateful to anyone who walked out to buy, or who stayed in to download, Smiths\u2019 music. The musicians are considered to be those who make the change, but the consumer plays an equal part by having faith.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re all in this together. It was always about a refusal to surrender to enemy propaganda \u2013 something I still face today just as much as I faced it in 1983, 84, 85, 86 and 87. The Smiths do not end.\u201d<\/p>\n

Later that same month, Morrissey said he had agreed to a \u201clucrative\u201d 2025 Smiths tour \u2013 but alleged that Marr \u201cignored\u201d the offer<\/a>. It was also around this time that the singer alleging that\u00a0a Smiths \u2018Greatest Hits\u2019 album had been \u201cblocked\u201d by\u00a0<\/a>the guitarist, and claimed Marr now oweds all of the \u201ctrademark rights and Intellectual Property\u201d of The Smiths, and can tour as a band without him<\/a>: \u201cThis action was done without any consultation to Morrissey, and without allowing Morrissey the standard opportunity of \u2018objection\u2019.\u201d<\/p>\n

Later, a representative from the guitarist\u2019s management team called Morrissey\u2019s comments on various topics \u201cincorrect\u201d<\/a> in a statement on X\/Twitter. As for the reunion offer, Marr responded: \u201cI didn\u2019t ignore the offer \u2013 I said no.\u201d Shortly after Marr\u2019s refutal, Morrissey issued a statement on his website that he had \u201csevered all connections\u201d with his management team<\/a>, though he did not provide any further details.<\/p>\n

October 2024 saw The Smiths drummer Mike Joyce speak to NME about settling his beef with Marr, and addressed the chances of a Smiths reunion following the death of basist Andy Rourke<\/a>: \u201cOther people will have other ideas but, as far as I\u2019m concerned, with Andy not being here, it\u2019s impossible to have a reunion of The Smiths.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

Back in December, Morrissey opened up on why he wanted the Smiths\u2019 reunion tour to happen<\/a>: \u201cI agreed because it felt like the last time such a thing would be possible. We\u2019ve all begun to grow old. I thought the tour that was offered would be a good way of saying thank you for those who have listened for what suddenly feels like a lifetime. It wasn\u2019t because I had any emotional attachment to Marr. I have absolutely none.\u201d<\/p>\n

Most recently, Mike Joyce announced a new \u201cno-holds-barred\u201d autobiography<\/a>, in which he chronicles the drama within The Smiths from his point of view. It\u2019s due for release in the UK on November 6 and is available for pre-order now<\/a>, with HMV offering a limited hardback edition \u2013 limited to one copy per customer \u2013 signed by Mike Joyce himself.<\/p>\n
