After hitting the mark for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/teams\/COL\/index.shtml\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:the third straight season;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">the third straight season<\/a>, the team is now desperately trying to find any kind of positive notes to finish out what\u2019s been <a href=\"https:\/\/www.statmuse.com\/mlb\/ask\/which-mlb-team-had-the-worst-run-differential-season\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:a historically brutal year;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">a historically brutal year<\/a>. With the playoffs a far-flung dream and .500 baseball far beyond their capabilities, the focus turns to checking out prospects and seeing which newcomers of today have the upside to morph into franchise cornerstones of the future.<\/p>\n<p>Advertisement<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">It\u2019s a familiar gameplan.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Still, we fans are uniquely equipped to take stock of these young would-be All-Stars. There\u2019s no more storied tradition on this site than our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.purplerow.com\/colorado-rockies-prospects-minor-leagues\/72415\/colorado-rockies-prospects-purple-row-prospects-purps-mid-season-2025\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Purple Row Prospect rankings;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Purple Row Prospect rankings<\/a>, a time when we all get to nominate, celebrate, and, uh\u2026 rate\u2026 the talented new faces that will one day make their way to the Bigs and doubtless become the bastions of hope that we so badly wish them to be.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">At this time, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mlb.com\/news\/giants-rockies-benches-clear-after-rafael-devers-home-run\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:despite the ickiness of 2025;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">despite the ickiness of 2025<\/a>, Colorado features a nice array of promising players all over the diamond.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">No position boasts as much hype as the starting pitching, though, with names such as Gabriel Hughes (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.purplerow.com\/colorado-rockies-prospects-minor-leagues\/73298\/colorado-rockies-prospect-rankings-mid-season-2025-top-30-summary\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:No. 11 PuRP;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">No. 11 PuRP<\/a>), Brody Brecht (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.purplerow.com\/colorado-rockies-prospects-minor-leagues\/73298\/colorado-rockies-prospect-rankings-mid-season-2025-top-30-summary\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:No. 5 PuRP;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">No. 5 PuRP<\/a>), and Carson Palmquist (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.purplerow.com\/colorado-rockies-prospects-minor-leagues\/73298\/colorado-rockies-prospect-rankings-mid-season-2025-top-30-summary\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:No. 17 PuRP;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">No. 17 PuRP<\/a>), as well as the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mlb.com\/player\/chase-dollander-801403\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:already-arrived Chase Dollander;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">already-arrived Chase Dollander<\/a>, being heralded as members of a truly formidable rotation in days to come.<\/p>\n<p>Advertisement<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">One name that I hear uttered less often, though, is one I feel is just as deserving of consideration: Sean Sullivan (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.purplerow.com\/colorado-rockies-prospects-minor-leagues\/73298\/colorado-rockies-prospect-rankings-mid-season-2025-top-30-summary\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:No. 9 PuRP;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">No. 9 PuRP<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p><img alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"960\" height=\"640\" decoding=\"async\" data-nimg=\"1\" class=\"standard-img\" style=\"color:transparent\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/6c8a3fca11260c87068f8a8ab6993fff.jpeg\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"\">This dude is fun.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Okay, in fairness, it\u2019s not like no one is talking about him. After all, he\u2019s currently ranked as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mlb.com\/milb\/prospects\/rockies\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Colorado\u2019s #13 prospect per MLB Pipeline;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Colorado\u2019s #13 prospect per MLB Pipeline<\/a>, while you ball-knowers have him rated as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.purplerow.com\/colorado-rockies-prospects-minor-leagues\/72982\/colorado-rockies-prospect-rankings-mid-season-2025-numbers-10-to-6-zac-veen-cole-carrigg\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:#9 in our most recent PuRPs;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">#9 in our most recent PuRPs<\/a>. There\u2019s clearly a decent amount of respect for his work, but I feel it\u2019s necessary to really give this lights-out left-hander his flowers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Since <a href=\"https:\/\/www.purplerow.com\/2023\/7\/9\/23789296\/mlb-draft-2023-rockies-select-collegiate-lhp-sean-sullivan-with-46th-overall-pick-wake-forest\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:being drafted in 2023;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">being drafted in 2023<\/a>, Sullivan has worked his way through Colorado\u2019s minor league system, showing excellent progression through <a href=\"https:\/\/www.milb.com\/player\/sean-sullivan-807743?stats=career-r-pitching-minors&amp;year=2025\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:his first three seasons;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">his first three seasons<\/a>. He was certainly effective in college with <a href=\"https:\/\/nusports.com\/sports\/baseball\/roster\/sean-sullivan\/10299\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Northwestern;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Northwestern<\/a> in Evanston (hey, my hometown!) as he <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/register\/player.fcgi?id=sulliv005sea#standard_pitching\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:recorded a 4.45 ERA in 2022;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">recorded a 4.45 ERA in 2022<\/a>, but Sullivan has been even more effective in professional ball, at least thus far.<\/p>\n<p>Advertisement<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Take this season.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">As I write this on Wednesday afternoon, Sullivan has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.milb.com\/player\/sean-sullivan-807743?stats=gamelogs-r-pitching-mlb&amp;year=2025\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:started 16 games for the Hartford Yard Goats;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">started 16 games for the Hartford Yard Goats<\/a> (or, I guess, <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/GoYardGoats\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:the Leaf Peepers?;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">the Leaf Peepers?<\/a>). Through those starts, which total to 89 2\/3 innings, he\u2019s allowed just 67 hits and a 2.51 ERA while striking out 92. He\u2019s done a decent job of limiting free passes as well, as he\u2019s walked 19 batters during that span. Yes, 2025 has certainly been kind to Sullivan.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Even with a fastball that only <a href=\"https:\/\/www.purplerow.com\/colorado-rockies-prospects-minor-leagues\/72982\/colorado-rockies-prospect-rankings-mid-season-2025-numbers-10-to-6-zac-veen-cole-carrigg\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:tops out in the low 90\u2019s;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">tops out in the low 90\u2019s<\/a>, Sullivan is showing that he\u2019s savvy enough to use it effectively to keep hitters on their back feet and keep hard contact to a minimum. That\u2019s the same kind of gameplan that made Jorge De La Rosa <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/r\/rosajo01.shtml\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:one of the most effective hurlers;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">one of the most effective hurlers<\/a> in the Rockies record books. Far be it from me to say that Sullivan\u2019s on the same trajectory, but speculation abounds.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Thus far in 2025, Sullivan is recording <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/register\/player.fcgi?id=sulliv005sea\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:9.2 strikeouts per nine;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">9.2 strikeouts per nine<\/a>. That kind of sensational swing-and-miss stuff has evaded the Rockies in recent seasons and would be a major addition <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mlb.com\/stats\/team\/pitching\/era\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:to an ailing rotation;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">to an ailing rotation<\/a>. In fact, that 9.2 mark ranks higher than any current Colorado starter\u2026 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/teams\/COL\/2025.shtml#players_standard_pitching::33\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:by kind of a lot;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">by kind of a lot<\/a> (Dollander\u2019s 7.1 is next-highest among Rockies starting pitchers).<\/p>\n<p>Advertisement<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">While I recognize the gulf of difference in Double-A versus MLB hitting, it\u2019s still interesting to consider that Sullivan may possess some of the filthiest pure stuff in the organization. That\u2019s got me, well, stoked.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">He\u2019s not perfect, of course \u2014 the Boston native has shown a habit of allowing a few <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/register\/player.fcgi?id=sulliv005sea#standard_pitching\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:too many base on balls;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">too many base on balls<\/a>, and he\u2019s going to need to keep the ball down and allow less fly balls if he\u2019s going to survive the unforgiving landscape of Coors Field. Still, I believe there are plenty of reasons to be optimistic about Sullivan\u2019s future in purple pinstripes, if his initial outings are indicative of his ability.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.milb.com\/video\/sean-sullivan-s-eighth-strikeout-x8662?t=colorado-rockies-affiliates\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Sean Sullivan&#039;s eighth strikeout | 06\/08\/2025;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Sean Sullivan&#8217;s eighth strikeout | 06\/08\/2025<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"\">How soon could that future arrive? At the same time, you never want to rush a prospect to the Major League level too quickly for fear of overexposure or unnecessary hardship, a conversation that\u2019s being had <a href=\"https:\/\/sports.yahoo.com\/article\/rockies-warren-schaeffer-4-word-201612444.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:about Chase Dollander currently;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;outcm:mb_qualified_link;_E:mb_qualified_link;ct:story;\" class=\"link  yahoo-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">about Chase Dollander currently<\/a>. Does that mean that Sullivan starts the 2026 season in the Rockies rotation? I say no, barring an otherworldly performance in spring training, but if I were (perhaps 2026) manager Warren Schaeffer, he\u2019d be on speed dial as one of the first names I go to for a call-up next year.<\/p>\n<p><img alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"960\" height=\"640\" decoding=\"async\" data-nimg=\"1\" class=\"standard-img\" style=\"color:transparent\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/dd87b806f25b6b7192fd0022e374600d.jpeg\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"\">I\u2019ve previously mentioned my vision of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.purplerow.com\/2024\/11\/21\/24302007\/what-does-the-2030-colorado-rockies-rotation-look-like-palmquist-rolison-dollander-sullivan-feltner\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Sullivan\u2019s historic rise to Rockies stardom before;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Sullivan\u2019s historic rise to Rockies stardom before<\/a>, and I\u2019m not about to quit now. With so many exciting names coming out of Colorado\u2019s farm system, don\u2019t forget about Sean Sullivan \u2014 he may turn out to be truly special.<\/p>\n<p>On the Farm<\/p>\n<p class=\"\"><strong>Triple-A:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.milb.com\/gameday\/express-vs-isotopes\/2025\/09\/03\/780204\/final\/box\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Round Rock Express 3, Albuquerque Isotopes 0;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Round Rock Express 3, Albuquerque Isotopes 0<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Advertisement<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">The Isotopes couldn\u2019t energize their offense as their five hits weren\u2019t enough to plate a run against the Express. Round Rock\u2019s pitching staff shut down Albuquerque\u2019s offense as Blaine Crim\u2019s double was the sole extra-base hit of the Isotopes\u2019 five total knocks. Mason Albright\u2019s three-run, five-inning start wasn\u2019t bad, but he took the loss in the contest.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\"><strong>Double-A:<\/strong>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.milb.com\/gameday\/fightin-phils-vs-yard-goats\/2025\/09\/03\/783352\/final\/box\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Reading Fightin Phils 16, Hartford Yard Goats 4;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Reading Fightin Phils 16, Hartford Yard Goats 4<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Lol of course Sean Sullivan has a tough outing the day I write about him. In easily his toughest outing this season, Sullivan allowed seven runs on ten hits and four walks to the Fightin Phils, while Carlos Torres and Evan Shawver surrendered five and two runs, respectively, in relief. Hartford\u2019s offense managed to scrape across a few runs in defiance thanks to multi-hit games from Jose Cordova and Braylen Wimmer, but the damage was far too much to overcome.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\"><strong>High-A:<\/strong>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.milb.com\/gameday\/indians-vs-emeralds\/2025\/09\/03\/789103\/final\/box\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Eugene Emeralds 4, Spokane Indians 1 (Game One);elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Eugene Emeralds 4, Spokane Indians 1 (Game One)<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Advertisement<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">The Emeralds took both games of their doubleheader against the Indians, who found a hard time managing any significant offense in either contest. Spokane managed just two hits in game one, while they managed to load the bases in the seventh but couldn\u2019t score in game two. The Indians recorded six total hits between both games.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">On the mound, Braxton Hyde pitched the entirety of game one, in which he allowed three runs on 11 hits and four walks in six innings. Game two saw Alberto Pacheco surrender one run in three innings, while Francis Rivera gave up three runs in his one frame of work, though none were earned.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\"><strong>Low-A:\u00a0<\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.milb.com\/gameday\/grizzlies-vs-quakes\/2025\/09\/03\/788445\/final\/box\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Fresno Grizzlies 7, Rancho Cucamonga Quakes 6;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Fresno Grizzlies 7, Rancho Cucamonga Quakes 6<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"\">The Grizzlies were juuust able to eke out the victory over the Quakes, who made things scary in the ninth when they scored two and put the winning run on base. Still, Fresno was able to do just enough thanks to the contributions of Roldy Brito (1-for-3 with a two-run home run) and Tanner Thatch (2-for-3 with 3 RBIs).
