Desmond Howard doesn\u2019t believe in Arch Manning.<\/p>\n
The 1991 Heisman Trophy winner believes the Texas quarterback shouldn\u2019t have been in the Heisman Trophy conversation entering the season, but no one actually wanted to say that.<\/p>\n
\u201cAll of the hype and Heisman talk around him was unwarranted,\u201d Howard\u00a0said Thursday on the \u201cRich Eisen Show<\/a>.\u201d <\/p>\n \u201cHe doesn\u2019t deserve having his name in the same breath as that trophy.\u201d<\/p>\n Howard added that \u201cnothing consistently jumped out to him on tape\u201d to generate that kind of greatness expectation.<\/p>\n \u201cPeople don\u2019t want to really criticize him, partially because he is a Manning,\u201d Howard added. \u201cThey want to stay in good favor with the Mannings, as they are a big name in our sport. So what they do is make it seem like\u00a0Matt Patricia, the defensive coordinator for\u00a0Ohio State, just called this brilliant game that kept\u00a0Steve Sarkisian\u00a0and\u00a0Arch Manning\u00a0off balance for four whole quarters.\u201d<\/p>\n Arch Manning struggled for Texas. YouTube Rich Eisen Show<\/p>\n Howard, an analyst on \u201cCollege Gameday,\u201d even criticized his own network for their coverage of Manning.<\/p>\n \u201cNow,\u00a0Matt Patricia\u00a0did call a very good game,\u201d Howard said. \u201cThere\u2019s no doubt about that. But I saw guys on\u00a0\u2018SportsCenter\u2019\u00a0and other shows pulling like three tape plays and showing how he may have confused\u00a0Arch Manning\u00a0with a look or secondary switch at the last minute,\u201d Desmond continued. \u201cI\u2019m watching the film and I can show you 10-12 plays where guys were running wide open and he either just didn\u2019t hit them with the ball or he didn\u2019t see these guys. It wasn\u2019t that complex or complicated.\u201d<\/p>\n The former Michigan star continued that Texas isn\u2019t tough enough to go on the road and beat a team like Ohio State, and called their 14-7 loss \u201cdisappointing\u201d but \u201cpredictable.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/p>\n Manning completed 17 of 30 passes for 170 yards with one touchdown and one interception, as fans watched the Longhorns\u2019 signal caller struggle to get his team in a position to win<\/a>.<\/p>\n His first three quarters were mostly a disaster before picking it up in the fourth quarter, although he still fell short of leading the comeback.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n Manning was 9 of 15 for 38 yards and an interception through three quarters.<\/p>\n
