{"id":199978,"date":"2025-09-04T16:24:13","date_gmt":"2025-09-04T16:24:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/199978\/"},"modified":"2025-09-04T16:24:13","modified_gmt":"2025-09-04T16:24:13","slug":"ira-401k-millionaires-hit-record-highs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/199978\/","title":{"rendered":"IRA, 401(k) millionaires hit record highs"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"InlineVideo-videoThumbnail\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/1757003053_200_106366937-1580482307005an-old-couple-sitting-on-a-bench-love-male-together-retirement-home-sitting-r.jpeg\" alt=\"Why America&#x2019;s retirement system gets a C+ rating while other countries scored higher\"\/><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/retirement\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Retirement\u00a0account<\/a> balances, which fell at the start of the year due to market volatility, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/06\/04\/average-401k-balances-fall-due-to-market-volatility-fidelity-says.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">bounced back<\/a> in the second quarter, according to the latest data from Fidelity Investments, the nation&#8217;s largest provider of 401(k) savings plans.<\/p>\n<p>The average\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/401k\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">401(k)<\/a>\u00a0balance jumped 8% from a year earlier\u00a0to $137,800, a record high,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/newsroom.fidelity.com\/pressreleases\/fidelity--q2-2025-retirement-analysis--retirement-account-balances-reach-new-record-high--rebounding\/s\/a28ab088-623d-469a-ab35-ddff450b0a4a\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Fidelity found<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The average\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/ira\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">individual retirement account<\/a>\u00a0balance also rose 5% year over year\u00a0to $131,366.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"headline0\"\/>Number of 401(k), IRA millionaires hit all-time highs<\/p>\n<p>The rebound in account balances helped boost the number of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/wealth\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">401(k) millionaires<\/a> to an all-time high.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The number of 401(k) accounts with a balance of $1 million or more jumped to 595,000 as of June 30, up 16% from the first quarter, according to Fidelity.<\/p>\n<p>The number of IRA-created millionaires also increased by 16% to a record 501,481.<\/p>\n<p>Positive savings behaviors were key to better outcomes, said Mike Shamrell, Fidelity&#8217;s vice president of thought leadership.<\/p>\n<p>The majority of retirement savers\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/06\/04\/average-401k-savings-rate.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">continued to make contributions<\/a>, even during periods of market turbulence, Fidelity found. The average 401(k) contribution rate, including employer and employee contributions, largely held steady at 14.2%, just shy of Fidelity&#8217;s suggested savings rate of 15%.<\/p>\n<p><strong>More from Personal Finance:<\/strong><br \/><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/08\/29\/global-retirement-systems-compared-for-long-term-security.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Comparing retirement security models<\/a><br \/><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/09\/03\/4percent-rule-inflation-retirement.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">He invented the 4% rule of retirement income<\/a><br \/><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/09\/02\/capital-gains-taxes-trump-big-beautiful-bill.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">How to leverage 0% capital gains taxes under Trump&#8217;s &#8216;big beautiful bill&#8217;<\/a><\/p>\n<p>A great stretch for the major indexes also helped.<\/p>\n<p>U.S. markets came under pressure after the White House first announced country-specific tariffs on April 2, causing some of the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/04\/08\/why-the-stock-market-hates-tariffs-and-trade-wars.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">worst trading days<\/a>\u00a0for the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/quotes\/.SPX\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">S&amp;P 500<\/a>\u00a0since the early days of the Covid-19 pandemic.<\/p>\n<p>However, markets then rebounded from those losses.\u00a0Savers who &#8220;stayed the course, continued to contribute at healthy levels and didn&#8217;t make significant changes to their allocation, were able to take advantage of the positive market conditions that followed,&#8221; said Shamrell.<\/p>\n<p>As of Wednesday&#8217;s close, the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/quotes\/.SPX\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">S&amp;P 500<\/a>\u00a0was up about 10% year to date, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/quotes\/NDAQ\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Nasdaq<\/a>\u00a0had gained more than 11% and the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/quotes\/.DJI\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Dow Jones Industrial Average<\/a>\u00a0rose roughly 6%.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We have seen a lot of resilience out of the market despite a lot of volatility,&#8221;
