BANGOR, Maine (WABI) – Drought conditions have worsened in Maine.<\/p>\n

The latest Drought Monitor released Thursday shows Severe Drought (D2) conditions expanding across the state. Last week, just over 10% of the state was in a Severe Drought. This week, almost 53% of the state is in the Severe Drought category. <\/p>\n

Areas of the state in the Severe Drought category: all of Androscoggin, Kennebec, Sagadahoc, Lincoln, Knox, Waldo and Hancock counties; most of Oxford, Franklin, and Washington counties; southern Penobscot, Piscataquis and Somerset Counties; northern Cumberland County. <\/p>\n

Many of those in the Moderate Drought (D1) category last week have been elevated to Severe Drought. Just under 10% of the state remains in a Moderate Drought.<\/p>\n

Last week, just over 24% of the state was Abnormally Dry (D0). That remained the same this week. Those areas are in Northern Maine. <\/p>\n

The Drought Monitor is valid as of Sept. 2, 2025. Data is taken from Tuesday the week prior to Tuesday of the current week. Data is then analyzed and a new map is released on Thursdays.<\/p>\n

The U.S. Drought Monitor is created in partnership between the National Drought Mitigation Center, the U.S. Department of Agriculture, and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.<\/p>\n
