New York City mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani <\/a>is speaking out after The New York Times <\/a>reported that advisers for Donald Trump<\/a> have discussed giving Eric Adams,<\/a> the city\u2019s current mayor and an independent candidate in this year\u2019s election, a position in the administration to \u201cclear the field\u201d for former New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo.<\/a><\/p>\n

On Thursday, Mamdani addressed the reported plan on \u201cAll In.\u201d <\/a>He told Chris Hayes that the Times\u2019 reporting was \u201coutrageous\u201d and that it constituted a wider attack on New York City\u2019s electoral system.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think oftentimes in a race such as this, it\u2019s tempting to think of this solely in the question of, how does this impact the race?\u201d Mamdani<\/a> said. \u201cBut this is an affront to our city\u2019s democracy. This is an affront to the values that make so many of us proud to be Americans \u2014 that we could choose our own leaders, not that our leaders pick themselves or their friends.\u201d<\/p>\n

This isn\u2019t the first reported interaction between the former governor and the president. In August, three people familiar with the matter told the Times<\/a> that Trump and Cuomo had held a phone call to speak about the mayoral race directly. (Cuomo has denied<\/a> that a phone call took place.)<\/p>\n

The democratic socialist said that the reported communication between the two showed how \u201cthreatened\u201d Trump is by the prospect of a Mamdani administration, and that the president was \u201cwilling to use every single tool and tactic at his disposal to try and assist Andrew Cuomo\u201d to prevent that from happening.<\/p>\n

Mamdani also criticized his competitors for reportedly working with the administration at a \u201ctime when Donald Trump has taken SNAP<\/a> from hungry New Yorkers [and] has passed legislation that would throw millions of New Yorkers off their health insurance<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n

Mamdani said the report highlights what \u201cso-called leaders are willing to give up in the name of securing power\u201d and reinforces why so many voters have lost faith in their elected officials: \u201cThat is why so many New Yorkers are turned off by our politics, because they see no relevance of their struggles in the conversations that are taking place.\u201d<\/p>\n
