{"id":201652,"date":"2025-09-05T06:53:10","date_gmt":"2025-09-05T06:53:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/201652\/"},"modified":"2025-09-05T06:53:10","modified_gmt":"2025-09-05T06:53:10","slug":"san-antonio-teens-use-ai-to-develop-flood-warning-system-after-deadly-hill-country-floods","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/201652\/","title":{"rendered":"San Antonio teens use AI to develop flood warning system after deadly Hill Country floods"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 kNAFkD cuqaEv article-text\"><strong>SAN ANTONIO<\/strong> \u2013 A teen robotics team in San Antonio is trying to develop an early warning flood detection system after the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ksat.com\/topic\/Hill_Country_Floods\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.ksat.com\/topic\/Hill_Country_Floods\/\">Hill Country floods.<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">The TechnoWizards Robotics Team is using artificial intelligence to develop the model. <\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Conversations have been happening across the state since July 4 about what future warning systems could look like. Angela Zhang said she started the project to help. <\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 kNAFkD cuqaEv article-text\">\u201cI decided to maybe take my past projects and turn them into something that can be used for this situation,\u201d Zhang said. <\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 kNAFkD cuqaEv article-text\">The TechnoWizards are made up of eighth graders, ninth graders and 10th graders. The teenagers are working with college students to build the program. <\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 kNAFkD cuqaEv article-text\">\u201cIt\u2019s a deep learning model,\u201d Zhang said. <\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 kNAFkD cuqaEv article-text\">Here\u2019s how the model works:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 kDvXdO font_openSans articleList\">\n<li class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__StackBase-sc-1fnzlkn-7 ecGWWE iQviKm\">\n<p>Using photos from past floods, the AI system learns to detect rising water<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__StackBase-sc-1fnzlkn-7 ecGWWE iQviKm\">\n<p>Cameras are placed in areas of high risk<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__StackBase-sc-1fnzlkn-7 ecGWWE iQviKm\">\n<p>Those cameras capture live images, and the AI model analyzes if the water levels captured are dangerous<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__StackBase-sc-1fnzlkn-7 ecGWWE iQviKm\">\n<p>If they are dangerous, the AI model sends an alert to residents via phone and email<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">The design is still in its early stages. In the meantime, the teenagers have found another way to use AI.
